The records of this office show that one Richard Ogden served as a private in Captain John Drake's Co., in the regiment of New York Militia commanded by Colonel Morris Graham, Revolutionary War. His name appears on two rolls of said organizations, one for June and july 1778, which shows that his pay at two and two-thirds dollars per month, commenced June 1st, the other, a roll covering the period August 1st to September 18, 1778, which shows that he was paid at the same rate. L 2 135 4d, and bears the marks "Enlisted Waggon Service". No record has been found of the service of any other Richard Ogden from New York in the Revolutionary War. Application was submitted to the Daughter of the American Revolution and approved in 1902. It was submitted by the granddaughter, and great granddaughter of Richard Ogden. They were Margaret Hannah Thompson Smith and her daughter Winona Beatrice Smith. Richard's National file # is 59306. Margaret was the daughter of Mary Sprague who was the daughter of Hannah Ogden, daughter of Richard. Hannah Thompson Smith was born and lived in Canada and probably knew Richard since he died at such an advanced age of about 92. I used the dates his grand daughter used on her DAR application. In a letter from my great aunt dated in the 1970's she said that her father had a glass picture of Jonathan Ogden in his Revolutionary War uniform (I believe that it was actually Richard. My aunt was in her late 80's at the time of writing the letter). In that same letter she said that in the glass picture he was eighteen years old, making him born about 1760. Based on the DAR application Richard served in the Dutchess County Militia in the summer of 1777. This would be the reason for my using his birth date as 1760 rather than most people who have probably estimated what they felt it should be. The connection to Jonathan Ogden is verified through a 1808 land record stating that Richard was the son of Jonathan Ogden.
