Note: Obviously, we do not have credible information for the date and location of William Millen's birth and we have three different sets of possible parents mentioned in documents. Extensive speculative searching based on those different parents and places provides nothing even remotely probable from the point of view of documentation. Marie's suggestion that all the parents mentioned may be relatives of some sort seems plausible, but we have no idea how they are related. I am particular curious about the fact that I can not find any census record for William Millen for 1871, 1881 and 1891. Where was he? Why is he not in any census record we can see on ancestry.ca? That is very odd - and very much unusual, which tends to point to something more dramatic and structural. Was he an orphan? Did he run away from home? Was he abandoned as a kid? Anything is possible.
My instinct is to support the actual use of names in subsequent family. We see that the names Della and Craig are used in William Millen's children, which suggest that the name Della Craig, mentioned as his mother in his last marriage registration, may have particular importance. At best, it is a point of speculation.
Frankly, this is the kind of anomaly that may lend itself to the nature of DNA research, in the same way that it might help with the James Ames problem. I will happily leave that to others. Have not seen any records for Myrtle that show her parents - other than 1901 Census. It appears as if she died in Weston Hospital, probably while working there, at age 16 in 1911. Her cemetery record shows she was buried in Prospect Cemetery. Note: I have entered this death reg'n. as applying to this William Millen based on suggestion of Marie Sparling. However, I'd rather see better information to confirm the match. His birth year is 4 years off from the routine age he gave in census records through his life - 1865. His parents are also not the same as he gave in his marriage reg'n. re Jemima Townsend. More work needs to be done here. Some of this may be due to the apparent problem William had with dates and details, plus the fact that his wife, Ethel, who was the informant, was not familiar with his early life.
