| Father | Richard Millen3 b. c 1835 |
| Mother | Della Craig3 b. c 1835 |
William Millen was born on 27 February 1865 at Lowell, Massachusetts, U.S.A; Massachusetts Birth Index: Name: William J. Mullen; Town: Lowell; Year: 1866; Vol.: 187; Page: 169 (Massachusetts Birth Index, 1866-1870, pg. 21 of 203, anccestry.ca) Note: This matches in terms of location and date, more or less. Date Feb 22 1861 & location Ont. per Death Reg'n. Date 1865 & location Cda. per marriage reg'n. - Jemima McMaster. Date 1867 & location Mass., USA per Marriage Reg'n. - Jemima Townsend. Date 1874 & location Lowell, Mass., USA per marriage reg'n. - Ethel Dyer. Date Feb 27 1865 & location Ont. per 1901 Census. Date Feb 1865 & location Minn.(or Mass.?) USA per 1911 Census. per email from Marie Millen, Sept 5, 2003. Location Pennsylvania per marriage reg'n of Lawrence Craig Millen.
Note: Obviously, we do not have credible information for the date and location of William Millen's birth and we have three different sets of possible parents mentioned in documents. Extensive speculative searching based on those different parents and places provides nothing even remotely probable from the point of view of documentation. Marie's suggestion that all the parents mentioned may be relatives of some sort seems plausible, but we have no idea how they are related. I am particular curious about the fact that I can not find any census record for William Millen for 1871, 1881 and 1891. Where was he? Why is he not in any census record we can see on ancestry.ca? That is very odd - and very much unusual, which tends to point to something more dramatic and structural. Was he an orphan? Did he run away from home? Was he abandoned as a kid? Anything is possible.
My instinct is to support the actual use of names in subsequent family. We see that the names Della and Craig are used in William Millen's children, which suggest that the name Della Craig, mentioned as his mother in his last marriage registration, may have particular importance. At best, it is a point of speculation.
Frankly, this is the kind of anomaly that may lend itself to the nature of DNA research, in the same way that it might help with the James Ames problem. I will happily leave that to others. (Dan Buchanan, April 1, 2021.)1,2,3,4,5,6 He married Jemima W. McMaster, daughter of James McMaster and Margaret Gilray, on 3 June 1891 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario; Marriage Reg'n.#014269: Groom: William John Millen; Age: 26; Res.: Toronto Twp; Born: Cda; Status: bachelor; Occ.: farmer; Parents: William Millen & Ann Watt; Bride: Jemima W. William Millen is shown to be a widower in his second marriage registration to Jemima Townsend. The girl, Myrtle, was born July 21 1895 so it may have been childbirth or soon afterward. Myrtle is with William and the two older boys, William and Howard, in the 1901 Census in Cardiff Twp. William Millen remarried Jan 28 1897 to Jemima Townsend. Have not seen any records for Myrtle that show her parents - other than 1901 Census. It appears as if she died in Weston Hospital, probably while working there, at age 16 in 1911. Her cemetery record shows she was buried in Prospect Cemetery. Note: Here is more difficult information. This document shows his parents as Richard Millen and Della Craig which is not the same as his marriage to Jemima Townsend which said John and Rachel. Age 39 puts birth year as 1874, way off. Maybe he simply did not know. (Dan Buchanan, March 29 2021.)10,11 William Millen lived before 5 February 1941 at 14 Aylmer St., Peterborough, Peterborough Co., Ontario; Residence 14 Aylmer St., Peterborough per Death Reg'n.5 He died on 5 February 1941 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Peterborough, Peterborough Co., Ontario, at age 75; Death Reg'n.#030158: Name: William Millen; Date: Feb 5 1941; Age: 79y 11m 14d; Place: St. Joseph's Hospital, Peterborough, 3 mos; Res.: 14 Aylmer St., Peterborough; Born: Feb 22 1861, Ont; Status: Married; Spouse: Ethel Dyer; Occ.: Miner, radium mi8nes, 5 yrs; Parents: Richard Millen, b. Note: I have entered this death reg'n. as applying to this William Millen based on suggestion of Marie Sparling. However, I'd rather see better information to confirm the match. His birth year is 4 years off from the routine age he gave in census records through his life - 1865. His parents are also not the same as he gave in his marriage reg'n. re Jemima Townsend. More work needs to be done here. Some of this may be due to the apparent problem William had with dates and details, plus the fact that his wife, Ethel, who was the informant, was not familiar with his early life.
Signe Eileen Marie Wold was born on 29 August 1932 at Matheson, Cochrane District, Ontario; Date Aug 29 1932 per notes provided by Marie Sparling, Nov 2004. Marie Sparling told me that she discovered that her grandmother (Wold) was born in Matheson, Ontario.1,2 As of 11 June 1949,her married name was Sparling.2 As of before 1953,her married name was Millen.1 She married Lawrence Craig "Larry" Millen, son of William Millen and Jemima Townsend, before 1953 at Ontario; "Common-law, never legally married" per notes provided to my by Marie Sparling, Nov 2004.1 As of 9 February 1964,her married name was Nakonechnik. Signe Eileen Marie Wold "After Russel Sparling left Signe, after they were married, she didn't know where he went or if he was dead or alive. They prounounced him dead after seven years which allowed her to remarry. Signe and Lawrence Millen were together for several years. She latter married Steve Nakonechnik. Signe later had a common-law relationship with Jack Rutter (Uncle to the author of this book on his mother's side of the family).
