Question: How is her grandmother, Desdemona Maude Ruggles, related to the people in this will. Debra obtained this will from a “cousin”. Transcription by Debra is in italics. My notes are in plain text.
To the three daughters of my beloved sister Elizabeth Clench
Elizabeth (Johnson) Clench is a sister of Sarah (Johnson) Ruggles. They are daughters of Brant Johnson and Margaret Campbell and granddaughters of Sir William Johnson who was the Indian Agent for the British during the Revolutionary War. Elizabeth married Ralfe Clench, a member of Butler’s Rangers, and they settled at Niagara when the war was over in 1783.

Hannah Catherine Clench
Hannah Catherine Clench does not appear to have married. She is single in the 1851 Census, living with her brother Francis Clenc.

Ann Kerr Clench
Ann Kerr Clench also appears as a single woman in the 1851 Census living with her brother Francis and sister Catherine.

Margaret Bullock……
Margart Clench married Col. Richard Bullock (his 2nd?), a British soldier who came to Canada around 1800 with his father, Colonel Richard Bullock. Richard, Jr.’s father and brothers Christopher and Charles settled near Brighton, Ontario which is where I grew up – my stompin grounds. The Bullocks are well known in that area. Margaret is living with her sisters and brother for the 1851 Census.

To my beloved sister Elizabeth Clench……
Again, this is Elizabeth Johnson who married Ralfe Clench.

To Sarah Johnson Lefferty the daughter of my sister Mary Lefferty that portion of my farm on the Mount Pleasan Road and now in the occupation of Henry Ellis to include the house and that portion of the farm next to Mrs Hughes farm …

Sarah’s other sister, elder Mary Johnson married John Johnson Lefferty and Sarah Johnson Lefferty would be their daughter.

Priscilla Dilk the daughter of my sister Elizabeth Clench
There is a Priscilla Dilke, age 37, in Thorold Twp. With husband Henry Dilke per the 1851 Census. The age does not match. Is this Priscilla Stuart Clench, daughter of Ralfe Clench and Elizabeth Johnson???

Urretta Richardson and Eliza Jane Richardson daughters of the later Charles Richardson
Charles Richardson was an important fellow, M.P.P.etc. He married Eliza Euretta Clench, daughter of Ralfe Clench and Elizabeth Johnson. Eliza died age 27 and he married Jane Clarke and then died young in 1848. He had a daughter in 1828 that died and then Eliza Jane - this “Urretta” appears to be another daughter of Charles and Eliza Euretta. There was at least another daughter Jane, daughter of Jane Clarke. Eliza Jane Richardson married Hugo Grant in 1853.

To Sarah Ruggles Clench daughter of the late Robert Clench I give and bequeath Ten acres of the same farm as last before described to adjoin the farm of Joseph Noble? …….

Robert Clench was a son of Ralfe Clench and Elizabeth Johnson. He married Hannah Diamond and lived in Brantford. He died in 1848.

I give to Hannah Clench the widow of Robert Clench deceased ……
Hannah (Diamond) Clench was the widow of Robert Clench of Brantford who died in 1848.

To Margaret Stewart and Elizabeth Clench Stewart daughters of my late sister Jemina Stewart I do give and bequeath to them for their use benefit my farm known as Hampden Hill and now in the occupation of Thomas Woods to be equally divided into parts one for Margaret Stewart and part to Elizabeth Clench Stewart

Jemima was Sarah’s youngest sister. She married Alexander Stewart and Margaret and Elizabeth are their daughters.

……to be held in trust for the benefit and use of Mary Claus the wife of John Claus …..

I also give to Howard Douglas Claus…..

I give to Eliza Crysler a woman of colour…..
I give to George Miller a boy of colour…..

I do nominate my beloved nieces the said Ann Kerr Clench and the said Elizabeth Clench Steward to be my executors of this my last will and testament

In testimony whereof I the said Sarah Ruggles have to this my last will and testament contained on one sheet of paper subscribed my name and affixed my seal this Twenty Second day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and fifty
Signed ……..Sarah Ruggles
Sarah Ruggles died County Wentworth May 1st 1851.3 She died on 1 May 1851 at Brantford, Brant Co., Canada West; Date May 1 1851 per FindaGrave. Date May 1 1851 per email from Debra Contestibe, Jan 22, 2008.3,6 She was buried on 3 May 1851 at Mohawk Chapel Cemetery, Brantford, Brant Co., Canada West; FindaGrave: Name: Sarah Ruggles; BIRTH: unknown; DEATH: 2 May 1851; BURIAL: Mohawk Chapel Cemetery, Brantford, Brant County Municipality, Ontario, Canada; MEMORIAL ID: 162526393; Note: Sarah was the wife of the William Ruggles noted above, and the daughter of Lt.
