Richard Smith Sr.1

M, b. circa 1760, d. before 17 September 1835
Richard Smith Sr. was born circa 1760 at U.S.A; Date of birth for Richard Smith, Sr. is uncertain. If there is only one Richard Smith at this place at this time, then he must have been the Loyalist, old enough to be around 20 at time of War. He came to Thurlow in 1789 and was married to Elizabeth Lake around 1795. Per his will, he died in early 1835, which would make him around 75 years old, not unreasonable.
per UEL Lists - Richard Dingman.1 He lived in 1789 at Conc 5, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; " ... The first large group of settlers, numbering about 50, crossed over from Prince Edward County about 1789 (no doubt making use of Mr. Meyer's batteau service). .. they settled close to the river. Among the earliest settlers are listed ... Richard Smith and sons ... " from The Rambling River, page 13 - Names of Original Settlers.
"United Empire Loyalists....." Richard Smith, John and Conrad Frederick and others came to Thurlow in 1789." per email from Ruth Waite, Feb 19, 2004.
Note: The Richard Smith noted in these writings may not mean this Richard Smith or the author may not know the specific timing - that he was married after coming here. Maybe this is later remembrances not clearly recalling the circumstances. Is there an earlier Richard Smith or is this Richard Smith older than we expect when he was married? Can we nail down a date for his birth from military records or some such??2 He lived on 30 June 1789 at Conc 5 Lot 1, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; "Richard Smith; 30th June 1789; Lot 1; 200 acres; Conc 5; Thurlow" List of Location Certificates - sent to me by Doug Smith, Feb. 21, 2005.2 He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Lake, daughter of Nicholas Lake and Mary Rhody Bradwell, before 1794 at Ontario; "UCLP S3/249 1797-1802 Nicholas Lake petitioning for his daughter Betsy Smith for 200 acres." - Crown Land documents suggest that Elizabeth "Betsy" Lake is the wife of Richard Smith - per Doug Smith & Ruth Waite.
" ... has a wife and one child .. " per Crown Land Petition S 3/49 - June 22 1797.3 Richard Smith Sr. "His Excellency Peter Rusell, Esq., acting Governor for the Crown of Upper Canada ... The humbler Petition of Ritchard Smith ... Your Petitioner prays .. he has a wife and one child ... and not received his Majesty's bounty ... June 22 1797 - Thurlow ... Ritchard Smith" Crown Land Petition S 3/49, C-2807, Ontario Archives on 22 June 1797 at Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario.3 He lived on 11 November 1797 at Conc 5 Lot 1, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; "On Nov. 11 1797 Richard Smith was granted patent of 100 acres as a UEL. A petition June 26 1797 for 200 acres stated he had a wife and a son. He signed with an x.This land was lot 1 Con 5 near the Moira River." per email from Ruth Waite, Feb 19, 2004.2 He "A couple of weeks ago, Ruth went to the Whitby Land Registry Office to look up Lots 3 and 4, Con. 4 Clarke Twp., Durham Co. We knew Richard’s son Nicholas( my gggGrandfather) lived there and the Smith Family Cemetery is on the farm." per email from Doug Smith, Feb 25, 2005. on 20 June 1801 at Conc 4 Lot 4, Clarke Twp., Durham Co., Ontario.2 He lived in 1802 at Conc 5 Lot 1, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; "5th Concession; Richard Smith - Patent 1802" per List of Original Grantees, Concessions 4 & 5, Thurlow, from The Rambling River, pg. 13. He lived on 17 May 1802 at Conc 5 Lot 1, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records show that Richard Smith obtained the Patent from the Crown for all 200 acres, dated May 17, 1802.
Note: This location is on the far western border of Thurlow Twp., along the Sidney border. It is a lot west of the bend in the Moira River where the town of Foxboro now is located.3 He lived on 3 June 1812 at Conc 5 Lot 12, Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (C217 B&S) show that Richard Smith purchased all 200 acres of Lot 12, Concession 5, Sidney Twp., from William Ketcheson, Senior, Instrument Date: Jun3 3, 1812, Registry Date: June 10, 1812
Note: The location is east of Frankford and south of the Trent River. It is owned by Patrick and Joseph Collins in the 1878 County Atlas Map.
