The Cobourg World) The death took place on Friday, 3rd inst., at Midale, Sask., of Mr. Charles Albert Lapp, a brother of Dr. T. C. Lapp of town, and of W. N Lapp, The Gulley. He was in his 61th year. Mr. Lapp had been in the West for the past 2 years, and for 27 years previous to that was publisher of the Brighton Ensign. Death came after a brief illness lasting for about six days. Mr. Lapp was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Lapp, The Gully, Haldimand Township. Early in his career he graduated from Ottawa Normal School and entered the teaching profession. He filled, with marked success, for some years the position of principal of Baltimore Public School, and later purchased the Brighton Ensign newspaper business, and continued in the Capacity of editor and publisher until three years ago, when he was succeeded in the business by his son, Mr. Clarence Lapp. Mr. Lapp then went West, and the principalship of the school at Midale becoming vacant, he returned to his early profession of teaching in which he continued up to the time of his passing. During the residence in Brighton, Mr. Lapp was a prominent member of the Board of Education, and was also prominently associated with the work of the Methodist church, where he served, as superintendent of, the Sunday School for over twenty years, and was honored by the church with appreciative addresses and presentation upon severing his connection to go west. Mr. Lapp was prominent in Masonic circles and was a Past District Deputy of Prince Edward District. He was also identified with the Canadian Order of Oddfellows, (being a past Grand Master) the K. O. T. M., A. O. U. W., C. O. H. C. and other fraternal organisations. He was a past president of the Canadian Fraternal Association. Mr. Lapp was twice married. His first wife was Miss Martha M. Taylor, daughter of the late Rev. Chas. Taylor at one time pastor of the Haldimand Methodist circuit. She died twenty-two years ago. Last November he was married to Miss Addie Wellington of Brighton. Besides his widow he is survived by a family of three sons and five daughters, viz: Clarence, publisher of the Brighton Ensign; Charles principal of Braeside Public School; Clarke, manager of the job department of the Belleville Ontario printing office; Mrs. George Macdonald, Markdale; Mrs. Wm. McColl, Wooler; Miss Mabel, teacher in the Industrial School at Elkhorn, Man; Miss Alida, of Midale, Sask., and Miss Blanche, trained nurse, of Guelph. His two brothers, Willis of Grafton, and Dr. T. C. Lapp of Cobourg, also survive him. One son, Ernest, formerly of Toronto, and one sister, Mrs. John Runciman, predeceased him. Mr. Lapp was a man of quiet, unassuming manner, genial and affable to all and made many lasting friendships in fraternal, educational and church circles. His passing will be long regretted by a very wide circle of friends and acquaintances. His remains were brought to Brighton for Interment. The funeral took place with Masonic honours, Saturday afternoon, 11th inst., from the residence of his son, to the Methodist church where service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wesley Elliott, assisted by the Rev. L. Phelps of Peterborough, Rev. J. C. Wilson of Toronto, Rev. Mr. Howard and Rev, A. K. McLeod. Before leaving the house, Rev. L. Phelps offered an appropriate prayer. During the service in the church Rev. L. Phelps and Rev. J. C. Wilson, intimate friends of the deceased, delivered, suitable addresses. Mrs. A. M, Macklam sang "Sometime we'll understand". The church altar was draped with crepe. There were beautiful floral tributes from the Methodist Sunday School, the Masonic Order, the Canadian Oddfellows, the Midale school pupils, and from friends and relatives." from pg. 029 of Newspaper Clippings, a collection donated by Shawnee Spencer to the Brighton Digital Archives, 2022. on 3 July 1914 at Midale, Saskatchewan.12 He died on 3 July 1914 at Midale, Saskatchewan, at age 63; Date 1914 per Burial.
