He operated a store in the main street and served as postmaster from 1841 to 1897." from "Homesteads: Early buildings and families from Kingston to Toronto" by Margaret McBurney and Mary Byers, 1979, pg. 83.1 Parker Smith Timmerman "The present owners are descendants of Parker Smith Timmerman, Odessa’s first postmaster and the man who was responsible for naming the town after a British engagement in the Crimean War. Parker Timmerman married Mary Eleanor Booth, daughter of Benjamin and sister of the milling brothers. He operated a store on the main street and served as postmaster from 1841 to 1897. He also collected taxes for the school, distributed newspapers, acted as treasurer of Ernestown, wrote wills, and was active in church affairs. The Timmerman store is one of a pair of well-preserved stone buildings on opposite corners of Main and Factory Streets on the south side of Main. Local histories refer to a revolutionary scheme devised by Timmerman which proves that genius sometimes lies in discovering the obvious. The mail was carried by stage coach along the York-Kingston road in large bags which contained all the letters for the scattered towns and villages along the route. When the mail coach arrived at Timmerman’s post office, sometimes at night, he like his counterparts along the way had to go through the entire collection to find the local letters. He suggested that the mail be sorted once at the start and placed in small bags, one for each stop. The inspiration was adopted, speeding mail delivery to a point which has probably not been surpassed since. On the opposite corner from the scene of Timmerman’s success is a companion building in stone, erected in 1840 and long a commercial building. It is now the Royal Bank, skilfully restored with a minimum of advertisement about its current function so that the original lines and fine windows are not unduly obscured. It is an example of what can be accomplished when businessmen and local historians work together to preserve a heritage for present use." from Homesteads, by Margaret McBurneyt & Mary Byers, pg. 83 & 84 in 1841 at Factory Rd. & Main St., Mill Creek, Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario.1 He lived circa 1855 at Ernestown Twp., Odessa, Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario; "The present owners are descendants of Parker Smith Timmerman, Odessa's first postmaster and the man who was responsible for naming the town after a British engagement in the Crimean War." from "Homesteads: Early buildings and families from Kingston to Toronto" by Margaret McBurney and Mary Byers, 1979, pg. 83.1 He appeared on the census of April 1881 at Ernestown Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Ontario; Age 68 at 1881 Census: Timmerman, Parker, 68, b.
