The wharf had been built in 1853 by The Brighton Wharf Company with the objective of having a very good wharf facility at the southern terminus of the new Brighton and Seymour Gravel Road. The Tobey Book (pg. 258) tells us that wagons were often lined up a half mile waiting to unload at the wharf. It also says the wharf itself extended 60 rods into the bay. A large 3-storey warehouse building was located just to the east of Centre Street which was the primary road from Brighton Village down to the Bay.
