This village's last horse-shoeing establishment is being converted into a dwelling. Alva B. Taft, veteran of fifty years as a blacksmith, has probably shod his last horse, but he declines to lay down his tools. His forge, anvil and other equipment have been transferred from his former shop to a compact workshop in the rear of his private garage. Mr. Taft began his apprenticeship in 1908 at his native Carrying Place. Two years later he came to Brighton to work for the late James McCracken, in a shop located on the corner of Prince Edward and Park Street, site of the garage formerly operated by Sam Swain, and now owned by Spencer's Dairy. Mr. Taft began working for himself in 1915, when he purchased the business of the late J. J. Corlett located in the old Coyle Shop near the corner of Young and Sanford Streets, site of the present Curtis Marshall residence.
