The alarm was turned in about eight o'clock, a blaze having broken out in Bates Brother Bakery, situated in the Gordon Block on the north side of the street. The frre was principally in the rooms over the bakery which was badly damaged by fire and water. These rooms are occupied by Mr. & Mrs. Orville Bates (who were in Toronto at the time of the fire) and Mr. Charles Bates. Their furniture and other household effects suffered severely. The store was flooded with water, as was also the store of Mr. George E. Karley, tailor, next door. Mr. Karley's stock is badly damaged with smoke and water, but there was no fire in his store. The stock of Mr. E. R. Sandford's grocery and millinery store, adjoining the Bates store at the east, suffered in the same way. Mr. and Mrs. Sandford occupied the rooms over their store and the household effects were damaged also. The Sandford store is owned by W. N. Davidson of Brighton and the Karley and Bates stores by J.
