Young Melinda decided to visit her occasional friend Sarah King but in the blink of an eyelash she was focusing all of her considerable charms on Dr. King." from "Dr. Billy King" by Paul Dalby, seen on the Cobourg History web site. on 23 September 1858 at Home of Dr. William Henry King, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Canada West. She "But the idea of a beautiful young woman falling in love with his photograph appealed to Dr. King's vanity. Melinda visited again the next day and, at Dr. King's request, stayed until late in the evening. Like many Victorian middle-class families, the Kings had a piano and a melodeon in the parlour. Melinda could play both instruments, and also had a lovely singing voice. She entertained Dr. and Mrs. King with renditions of popular songs, such as "Kitty Clyde", "Old Dog Gray", and "Hazel Dell". Dr. King was soon infatuated with Melinda. Sarah, who could neither play a note nor sing, seemed rather drab in comparison. Vandervoort, returned from Cape Vincent, NY about three weeks after she went there with Dr. King to find refuge at the home of her Aunt Catherine Bates. We see that she was living with her parents in Sidney Twp. for the April 1861 Census. Records show that she was married in Michigan in 1868 to Henry Ryerson Smith, who had also grown up in Sideny Township. (Dan Buchanan, Mar 6 2024) circa 10 November 1858 at Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., Canada West. She Melinda Vandervoort's "Aunt Catherine Bates" was Catherine Vandervoort, a sister of Melinda's father, John Hess Vandervoort. Catherine was the second wife of William Fairhall Bates of Cape Vincent, New York, his first wife having only recently died. Not long afterward, William Bates died, leaving Catherine on the farm with kids. That may have happened not long before Dr. William Henry King and Melinda Vandervoort arrived at the farm for a safe haven. It will be interesting to see if we can find the exact location, probably in a township a few miles from town. Keep looking ... (Dan Buchanan, Mar 1 2024) circa 20 November 1858 at Cape Vincent, Jefferson Co., New York, U.S.A.. She "It was late evening when King reached the Vandervoort farm. John and Elizabeth, Melinda's parents, had never met King before and his reason for coming alarmed them. King said that his wife's body was being exhumed and that soon a warrent for his arrest would be issued. He said there would also be a warrant for Melinda's arrest. He wanted to take her to the United States where they would be safe until the trouble was straightened out. Melinda's parents were reluctant to allow her to go with King, but the fear of her being arrested prevailed. They said she could go with King on the sole condition that the pair go to Melinda's aunt's house in Cape Vincent, New York, a small community on the St. Lawrence River." from 'Dr. William Henry King: A Gradual and Painful Death", in the book "Murder; Twelve True Stories of Homicide in Canada" by Ed Butts, pg. 43
"A furious Dr. King went immediately to the Vandervoort farm in the township of Sidney where he spent an hour talking to Melinda. Then King took Melinda across the U.S. border to the safe haven of an aunt's house." from "Dr. Billy King" by Paul Dalby circa 20 November 1858 at Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., Canada West. She "Melinda Freeland Vandervoort, examined - I know the prisoner at the bar; I received the letter produced from him; I sent him the likeness produced and the enclosed note." from the transcript of the trial of Dr. William Henry King of Brighton for the poisoning of his wife, page 27, Toronto Metro Reference Library on microfilm.

SMALL INVESTMENT BROUGHT THOUSANDS. SUIT SHOWS HOW MILLINER IN LAND DEALS HERE MADE FORTUNE FOR HERSELF. How a wife's legacy of $300 grew into a small fortune when the proceeds of an Iowa millinery business were invested in Los Angeles property, was told in Judge Valentine's court yesterday in the trial of the suit of the heirs of the late Henry S. Smith against S. H. Vandervoort [her brother], administrator of the estate of Melvenda E. Smith, wife of Henry R. Smith. The heirs sought to share in the estate on the ground that it was community property. The court gave judgment for the defendant, holding that the action was barred by the statute of limitations and that there was delay in prosecuting it. The story goes back to a little town in Iowa. When Mrs. Smith married Henry R. Smith, who was a brother of the late George A. Smith, a member of the Los Angeles City Council, she invested $300 received from her parents in a millinery store. The store prospered. The proceeds of the store were invested in a half interest in eighty acres in Central avenue in 1874. About 1903 the interest was sold for about $30,000, the property having been taken in Mrs. Smith's name because, as Mr. Smith said, she had earned the original money out of which the investment grew. She made an investment with this money in Main street property which was subsequently sold for $40,000. The heirs of Mr. Smith, who died December 23, 1907, asked that this $40,000 received from the sale of the property be held in trust for their benefit." "Previous to the ownership of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hobbs, the factory belonged to Mr. Horace Way, who according to Mrs. Edith Way (his daughter-in-law) bought the property stretching back to the Third Concession in 1899; she believes that the building was in place at the time but was perhaps not a factory, and that it was remodelled for the purpose of cheesemaking. Mrs. Way visited her in-laws at Cedar Creek many times while living in Detroit, where her husband Lisle worked, but when his health failed the family returned to Cedar Creek. He and his mother died at Cedar Creek on the same day, and Edith stayed on at the factory to help look after things during the years 1936 - 1937. Although this was a sad and difficult time for their mother, daughters Rene, Dorothy and Yvonne remember many happy times. Rene (now Mrs. Gerald Simpson) remembers the busy factory ... Mrs. Way remembers that the hydro was installed in 1930 ... " from The Tweedsmuir Histories of Codrington, copied from microfilm at The Metro Toronto Reference Library, Nov 2007.
