Mr. Smith was born on a farm near Belleville, Ont., Can., April 3, 1831. He decided in early life to follow a commercial career rather than agricultural, and entered the dry goods business in a small way in Canada. He married and later came to the states, and thirty-four years ago established himself in the ladies furnishings and millinery business in this city, remaining here for sixteen years. When he first entered in business, Mr. Smith occupied the old Armbruster building where A. Psenicka is now located. His stock was a very modest one, but his business grew and after he occupied the building which the Baddie-Ward Music Company occupies. Mrs. Smith sold out here eighteen years ago and went to Los Angeles where he invested in real estate and became very wealthy. Mrs. Smith survives her husband, but the couple never had any children. Aside from a brother, G. A. Smith, former member of the city council of Los Angeles, the deceased is survived by one other near relative, a brother who lives in British Northwest territory. Mrs. Smith was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity of Los Angeles, and was especially active in Shrine work, being a member of Al Malalkah temple. H. R. Smith, Once Prominent Merchant Here, Dies in Los Angeles. Word received in the city by Dr. and Mrs. Kierulff, from Los Angeles, this morning, announces the death in that city of Mr. H. R. Smith, at one time a prominent merchant of this city. Mr. Smith died on Wednesday morning at 6 o'clock at his home, 5216 Central Ave., of apoplexy, with which he was stricken thirteen days before. Dr. Harry A. Smith and Dr. A. M. Smith, the latter city police surgeon, both nephews of the deceased, worked with him night and day, assisted by two other doctors and two trained nurses, but the patient never regained consciousness from the first shock. Mrs. Smith's funeral was held on Friday of last week at 2 p.m.. Interment following in Rosedale Cemetery." from newspapers.com, (accessed through ancestry login credentials - it worked!!)
