Family history has this Ames group descending from the early settlers in Massachusetts and there are suggestions some of them lived in New York State before coming to Upper Canada. This would fit with the father of this Elisha Ames being a United Empire Loyalist. He lived in 1809 at Thurlow Twp., Belleville, Hastings Co., Upper Canada; "Much of what is known about early life in Belleville comes from his wife's recollections, which are among the Canniff papers in the Ontario Archives. Martha once named the people living in houses within the original town limits in 1809 as "McIntosh, Johnson, Dr. Spareham, Major Thompson, P. Holmes, Mrs. Simpson (who owned the tavern), R. leavens, Simmons (a cooper), S. McNabb, Ames, Ackeman, Stewart and Maybee." Note: This passage is especially interesting because it names three potentially related persons. The Ames could have been Elisha Ames. The Ockerman could have been part of his wife, Mary Ockerman's family. John Simons could be the one Mary married after Elisha Ames died.?????? He appeared on the census of 1810 at Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1810 Census: Elisha Ames, 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 1 female over 16, 2 females under 16. Note: The abcense of reference to the two females under 16 is quite clear; there are no confusing marks on the document. It would appear that the two girls have died.

This may refer to the date of his wife's second marriage to John Simons?? It is the only reference I have seen regarding Elisha Ames's death.
Note: The early death of Elisha Ames would fit well with the early life of James Ames, if they are father and son. There is absolutely no reference in any later records of the parents of James Ames, other than the fact, in census records, that he was born in Ontario around 1807.¹

Note: After much digging and speculating, I am placing this Mary, wife of Elisha Ames, as a dau. of Jacobus Ackerman and Betje Belser. Her marriage register clearly says Mary Ockerman and most trees have Mary Ackerman, but with no idea who her parents were. Jacob Ockerman who ended up as cooper to the Canniffs in Canniff Mills, is listed as Jacob Ackerman in DavidAckerman45 tree so I am thinking Mary and Jacob may be siblings who took the different spelling. I found an assessment record for 1808 in Fredericksburgh for Jacob Ackerman which may be this guy, with only 1 horse and no land. He is then married to Phoebe Dunham - who are also in the assessment. John Hart is also there, mother of Elizabeth Hart, wife of James Ackerman, who I am assuming is a brother of Jacob. James Ackerman appears in the list of Crown Deeds in Fredericksburgh, Jun 10 1801, Conc 2, Lot 10, 200 acres.³ She married Elisha Ames on 19 January 1804 at Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Upper Canada; "Elisha Ames and Mary Ockerman, both of Fredericksburgh, Jan 19 1804." from Rev. It shows Mary Ackerman with Elisha Ames as the first husband and John Simmons as the second.

     John Simmons was born in 1780; See marriage to Mary O(A)ckerman. Date 1780 per family tree of jblee25 on ancestry.ca, Sep 2 2018.¹ He lived in 1809 at Thurlow Twp., Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; "In the year 1809.      Elisha Ames was born circa 1805 at Upper Canada; A second Male under 16 (besides James) is reference in 1810 and 1811 Census. He married ? ? circa 1828; per 1833 Census & Assessment, Haldimand Twp. Elisha Ames lived on 17 April 1830 at Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; Witness at Marriage - Marriage Register: "Robert Webster of the Township of Kingston and Sarah Murray of the township of Marysburgh were married by Banns by me, Marysburgh, this day, 17th April 1830 - Job Deacon. This marriage was celebrated by the Rev. Job Deacon on the date above. In the presence of: Elisha Ames & James Ames. Robert Webster & Sarah H. Murray." Note: This is the first time we have seen Elisha Ames and James Ames mentioned together. There are numerous references to Elisha in the area but this shows that they were both in or near Marysburgh in 1830 when James and Mary were married. It remains to determine whether this is our James or if Elisha Ames is James's brother, father or uncle. He appeared on the census of 1833 at Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1833 Census: Elisha Ames (first one at top of page); (no land info); Males over 16 - 2; Males under 16 - 2; Females over 16 - 2; Total Family - 6

Things fit rather well constructed this way, however. This connection assumes that Elisha, James' brother, lived with him on Waupoos Island and came up to Cramahe/Murray with them in 1850. This Elisha and his wife do not appear in any subsequent census records in this area.

She married Elisha Ames, son of Elisha Ames and Mary Jane June Ackerman, on 25 November 1850 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Elisha Ames to Lovina Vanwicklin, both of Cramahe, Nov 25 1850, by Rev.
