As you know, I have been somewhat slowly finishing a book on Col. William Marsh. Here is the dope on his movements:
Matthias Marsh married Priscilla Brigham, Jan 2, 1725/6 in Coventry Connecticut. Matthias and "Persiller" as it is often written, had four children there Elizabeth, b. October 1, 1727, Matthias, Dec 28, 1729, William January 10, 1738, and Bethiah, Nov 2. 1743. I imagine there were miscarriages and stillborns etc in the intervening years. [Births, Marriages, Baptisms and Deaths from the Records of the town and Churches of Coventry, Connecticut, 1711-1844.]; Elizabeth married Zebulon Ross from Windham County, Ct. (to the east a bit) in Ct. in the 1740s; In 1750 Matthias and Priscilla, 12-year old William, and (if living) Matthias and Bethia moved to the village of Webatuck in what is now South Dover (and then Pawling), Dutchess County, New York. (That lines on the border of Ct. in an area called "the Oblong". Matthias commanded a militia in the French and Indian War, but saw no shooting. William soon grew to take on many local responsibilities, including tax appraiser for Pawling. He met his wife, Sarah French there. She and her family had come up from Shelton, Ct., and they bought (and leased) a good piece of land, and her father pursued both farming and fine carpentry. After the conclusion of the French and Indian War, the area later called Vermont, became attractive to new settlers, and the governor of New Hampshire, who thought he had rights there, granted land to many settlers, and the Marsh and French families were some of the early takers. They apparently started initial settlement slowly, going up in the summers to clear land, built barns and houses, and returning in the fall to take up duties in Pawling. They did not move to Vermont until 1768, so the older children -- Elizabeth [Sexton], Matthias, Mary [Soper], Hannah [Weller], Jeremiah were born in Pawling (not Amenia as many sources say), while Benjamin, Samuel William, William Samuel, Charlotte [Southwick] and John Johnson were born in Vermont, the first 3 in Manchester, and the last two in Dorset, just north of Manchester; And now a question: You have a Joseph Marsh listed as a Loyalist at Fredericksburgh -- do you have any idea if he is a connection through one of the other Marsh families? I had a query on that today.
Keep up the good work. Wilson Brown" per email from Wilson Brown, June 17 2010. circa 1787.4 He "Marsh, Joseph of Fredericksburgh. Soldier, King's Rangers. See OC 24 Jan 1828. She lived on 8 April 1829 at Con 4 Lot 16, Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (Patent) show that Elizabeth Dingman obtaned the Crown Patent for all 200 acres of Lot 16, Conc 4. As of circa August 1829,her married name was Palmateer. She married Francis Leroy Palmateer, son of Peter Parmentier and Ann Garret, circa August 1829 at Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records show that Francis Palmateer and Elizabeth Palmateer sold the 200 acres of Lot 16, Conc 4 to Levi and Chester Loomis. Crown Patent for this same 200 acres had been acquired by Elizabeth Dingman, the widow of Jared Dingman, April 8, 1829, after some petitions that asked to void any claim for the original location of one John Devine, who never lived here, according to James J. Merriam and Roger Merrell. IGI Record show Francis Palmateer married Elizabeth Dingman and, based on ages and the above, it appears as if it was not a daughter of Jacob Dingman but the widow of Jared Dingman. More proof is hoped for but this is very good, all things considered. Elizabeth ? lived on 1 August 1829 at Conc 4 Lot 16, Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Land Registry Records (2114, B&S) show that Francis Palmateer and Elizabeth Palmateer sold the 200 acres of Lot 16, Conc 4, Percy Twp. to Levi and Chester Loomis (See Land Petitions.)
