The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. Per burial. "Her husband, Mr. Benjamin Austin, predeceased her some twelve years." per Obit.11 He was buried on 24 September 1900 at Belleville Cemetery, Plot M Sec 5 Lot 14, Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; Date pf Death Sep 21 1900 per Death Reg'n. There is no memorial stone on this grave for Benjamin Austin or his wife. The only stone is for George, his son and one of George's wives. The Belleville Cemetery database shows George as the lot owner and there are five records for interments: Benjamin, Mary, George, Mrs. George and Beatrice. Maybe Beatrice is George's wife. The stone is not clear. The date of Benjamin's death is 1900 although there is an interment date I did not record. This should be obtained.12
