ITS Date: Nov 25 1840. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Twp., Conc 5, Lot 31, pg. 185 of 259, pg. 1, copied from OnLand.ca, by Dan, Apr 12 2020)
Note: The rear half means the part north of Cold Creek.4 He appeared on the census of 1841 at Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; 1841 Census: Richard Holland; 1 male over 16; 7 males under 16; 1 female over 16; 1 female under 16 (Newcastle District Census, Murray Twp.)3 He appeared on the census of 1848 at Conc 5 Lot 31, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; 1848 Census: Richard Holland; Conc 5, Lot 31, occ., non-prop; farmer (Newcastle District Census, Murray Twp.)3 He appeared on the census of 1850 at Conc 5 Lot 31, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; 1850 Census: Richard Holland; Conc 5, Lot 31, occ., prop; Total Persons: 8 (Newcastle District Census, Murray Twp.)3 He lived on 1 January 1852 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Brighton Township was created January 1, 1852, from the east side of Cramahe and the west side of Murray. The boarder between the newly sized Cramahe and the new Brighton townships was the lot line between lots 10 and 11. (Dan Buchanan, July 14 2021.) He appeared on the census of March 1852 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Age 60 at 1851 Census: Holland, Richard, 60, b. N.B., C.E., yeoman, married; Mary, 57, b. Note: The Lynch family is above and John McPhail below. Abigail Holland and family is lower on the page, minus James Holland. George Hanna and John Parr are in between. (Dan Buchanan, Aug 19 2021.)5 He On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. (Dan Buchanan, July 14 2021) on 21 April 1852 at The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West. He lived on 11 December 1852 at Conc 5 Lot 31, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (? D222) show that Richard Holland sold the north half of lot 31, conc 5, Murray Twp. to Elijah H.? Meyers. ITS Date: Dec 11 1852. Reg'n. Date: July 25 1868. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Twp., Conc 5, Lot 31, pg. 185 of 259, pg. 1, copied from OnLand.ca, by Dan, Apr 12 2020)
Note: The nature of this transaction is unclear. It looks like Richard Holland obtained two mortgages on this property and it eventually reverted to one of the mortgage holders, Elijah W. Meyers and his wife would eventually sell it to Charles W. Lyon. This supports the mystery of what happened to Richard Holland. His brother, James Holland, apparently came back to Brighton Township since there is a clear Death Registration for him Sep 10 1880. There is no documentation for Richard in this area after the 1861 Census, at least that I have seen. (Dan Buchanan, Aug 19 2021.)4 He appeared on the census of April 1861 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Age 75 at 1861 Census: Holland, Richard, 75, b. D339) show that a Quit Claim was issued from Richard Holland to Willet C. Austin re the 100 acres of the west half of 31, conc 6, Brighton Twp. ITS Date: Jan 25 1869. Reg'n. Date: Feb 8 1869. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Twp., Conc 6, Lot 31, pg. 137 of 169, pg. 1, copied from OnLand.ca, by Dan, Aug 19 2021)
Note: Here is one more land transaction that supports the notion that Richard Holland had a lot of irons in the fire from a real estate standpoint, with many mortgages involved. This may be the reason he left the area. (Dan Buchanan, Aug 19 2021.)4
