- Death*: 22 April 1950; Warkworth, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Edward Jaques: One of the oldest residents of Percy Township passed away in Warkworth on Saturday, April 22, 1950, in the person of Edward Jacques, in his 90th year. Mr. Jacques was born in Trowtown, Peckham Rye, London, England, on December 27th, 1861, and was a son of the late Joseph and Harriett Jacques, being one of a family of eight. Upon coming to Canada he settled in Prince Edward County. On March 12th, 1884, at Picton, he was united in marriage to Emma Hilton and they celebrated this year their 60th wedding anniversary. Since his marriage, he has spent most of his life in Percy Township, where in his younger years he was engaged in farming. He was favourably known and highly respected by his friends in this vicinity. Since failing health forced him to retire, he and his wife have shared the home of their daughter, Florence, Mrs. C. Sherwin of this village. Besides his sorrowing wife and daughter, he is survived by two sons, Fred of Brighton and Harry of Campbellford, two grandsons and two great grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Allen Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 25, in charge of Rev. H. G. Lester of St. Paul's United Church. Pallbearers were Aubrey Lockhart, Vincent Jones, Sloan Ewing, William Allen, Milford McVety and Claude Morgan. Burial was at Warkworth Cemetery. Flower bearers were Bert Nelson, Joe A. - Immigration*: 1870; Coe Hill, Hastings Co., Ontario; Russell Jaques told me on October 10, 2000, at Campbellford, that his grandfather, Edward Blake Jacques (1861-1950) came from a large, poor family in Peckham Rye, a district of London, England. At the age of only 9 he ran away from home by himself and stowed away on a cattle ship bound for Canada. He ended up at Coe Hill where he spent his teens.

Page 11, Line 33-37 - Lot 15, Conc 2, 200 acres12 - Note: circa 1905; Northumberland Co., Ontario; Emma (Hilton) Jacques did not like the C in the name because it appeared too "French", therefore she had it legally changed to Jaques. This is why the children of Edward and Emma are officially Jacques at their births but most subsequent references are Jaques. (per Anita Jaques, widow of Glenn Jaques, at a meeting in her home in Belleville, Oct 1, 2000)
Note: Actually, Glenn had told Anita that the name used to be Jakes. Documents do not support this.
Note: Official documents re this name change may be available - will try to find out how to get them. - Census: 1911; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Age 50 at 1911 Census: Jaques, Edward, 50, b.
