  • Immigration*: 1818; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "In 1818, James Morrow, with his wife, Margaret Smith, and six-week-old son John, left Bally James Duff, County Cavan, Ireland, to sail to Canada. The voyage took thirteen long weeks. This was an ambitious journey. Sadly, James died in the cholera epidemic sweeping through Montreal when he was returning to Ireland in 1825. His widow then married Charles S. Becker, who joined her on the farm. On their arrival in Canada, the Morrow family had settled on the George Little farm (bordered by Highway 401 on the south and County Road 30 on the west)." per "The Morrows of Hilton", by Pat Smart & Ruby Vancamp, Ch.8, pg. 52, "Brighton Township" by Florence Chatten, 2009.

  • Note: 21 April 1852; Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Lewis Shearer died, along with Jacob Herrington, in "The Breakaway", on April 21, 1852. Late that evening, after several days of heavy rain in conjunction with significant snowmelt, the gravel bank on the north side of Little Lake, just north of Hilton, gave way. The water from the lake cascaded down the narrow creek bed, destroying everything in its path, including a saw mill. Lewis Shearer and Jacob Herrington were working in Mr. Shearer's mill which was located in a wider part of the valley to the east end of what we know as the campground today. Farther down the creek to the north east, the flood damaged William Simpson's mill but there were no fatalities there. The water eventually emptied into the Trent River at Frankford. This is a well-known story in the area. My parents participated in plays at church and school gatherings which recounted the drama of this important event in the history of the community. My grandfather, Lloyd Ames, liked to recount the tale as we drove through the valley on the way to Brighton when I was a kid. (Dan Buchanan, June 22 2021)
  • Residence: 28 October 1853; Conc 3 Lot 36, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Land Registry Records (Grant A403) show that M. M. Dobbs & C. J. Dobbs granted 110 acres of the north half of Lot 36, Conc 3, Brighton Twp. to Sarah Shearer, "and after her death to her children". ITS Date: Oct 28 1853. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Twp., page copied from OnLand.ca, Conc 3, pg 309 of 320, Lot 36, by Dan, Apr 13 2020)
Note: I am guessing that M. M. Dobbs refers to one of Alexander Thomas Dobbs' nieces, Madeline Mary Dobbs, who appears in several trees as a daughter of Conway Edward Dobbs, and brother of Alexander Dobbs. C. J. Dobbs may also refer to Catherine Josephine Dobbs, sister of Madeline Mary Dobbs. Alexander Dobbs had obtained the original Crown Patent for all 200 acres of this lot in 1817 and he had no children, so it may have been inherited by his nieces. If anyone can add to or correct this, please feel free. (Dan Buchanan, May 11 2020).15

  • Residence*: 20 April 1855; Conc 3 Lot 36, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; "Sarah Shearer petitioned Council to pay for land taken by the Percy Road and for fencing required by the new road. - To the municipal council of the township of Brighton: the petition of the undersigned humbly sheweth that the gravelled road now building crosses lot number thirty six in the third concession of this township, now in possession of your petitioner. That your petitioner has suffered great inconvenience not only from the loss of ground occupied by said road but also from having the remaining part open to commons. Your petitioner therefore prays that you will take her case into your favorable consideration and allow her such sum as will be sufficient to pay for fencing the road, and compensate for the value of the land actually occupied by said gravelled road and your petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray. Brighton 20th April, 1855 -- Sarah (her mark) Shearer" (from page 310 or The Tobey Book.
Note: The petitioner here is Sarah Shearer - not Sheaver - who is the widow of Lewis Shearer, one of the men who died in the Breakaway of Little Lake in 1852. The location at issue is the land on the east side of the new Brighton-Seymour Gravel Road at the place north of Hilton and south of the steep valley where the Breakaway deluge swept down the creek. Carmen Road runs east on the southern edge of the Shearer land and the road to the Stone School goes east on the north side of the pond where a cheese factory was located during my childhood in the 1950's and 1960's. This petition shows that the new road ran along the west side of the Shearer land and needed a fence to keep common traffic off of their property. This demonstrates that The Brighton and Seymour Gravel was built soon after The Breakaway happened in order to replace The Old Percy Road to the west. It is interesting to note that in 1855 the new Brighton-Seymour Gravel was still seen and spoken of as "the Percy Road" - not the Campbellford Road or the Seymour Road or the Warkworth Road. The village that would later take the name Norham and the growing village at Warkworth was even then called Percy when described in terms of Brighton Township roads.16
