  • Note*: 1803; Judge Fisher Farm, Picton, Prince Edward Co., Ontario; "Smiton Simmons was born in England in 1769 and emigrated to the United States with his father, mother and one brother, James Simmons, just prior to the Revolutionary War. The family settled in Schoharie County, New York and it was here that Smiton Simmons married Sarah White, said to have been a cousin of Rueben White, the Sidney pioneer. Two children, Polly and Stephen, were born to them in Schoharie County. In 1802 they emigrated to Canada, making their first settlement in the "Judge Fisher Farm" near Picton in 1803. The following year Smiton Simmons purchased three hundred acres of land in Cramahe and moved his family there. Their four youngest children were born on this farm. Smiton Simmons and his son, Stephen, server in the War of 1812. The former was a first-class mechanic and was detailed at Kingston to manufacuture sleighs, waggons, ox yokes, axe helves, etc., for the use of the troops; the latter acted as teamster, drawing ammunition a supplies between Kingston and Toronto. For his service to the Government, Smiton Simmons received two hundred acres of land in the 4th concession of Murray. He was a man of great force of character and took a prominent part in the affairs of the day. Both he and his wife died on the Cramahe farm; the latter in 1852, aged fifty-four, while the former died in 1865, aged ninety-six." from Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, pg. 727 & 7286

  • Note: 1812; Ontario; "Samuel Waite and Smyton Simmons came together from Albany County near Poughkeepsie in Lower New York State. They came by covered wagon bringing some equipment, and crossed at Cape Vincent just before the War 1812 started. It is said that some trouble was experienced in crossing the boundary line. Both were big men and well built. It is said that Samuel struck and knocked down the Canadian Customs man, and the party drove on. Samuel and his wife, brought their five children all under ten years of age, and Symton Simmons and his wife, Sarah Waite, had five children all under 13 years of age." per GEDCOM of Keith Armstrong, May 16 2010.
    Note: This is insteresting. Smyton Simmons was in Cramahe as early as 1804 and said to be in Prince Edward in 1803 where son John R. Simmons was born. They could have helped bring Samuel Waite's family to Canada in 1812 but the Simmon family was already here.5
