while others maintain that it is German. From the fact that the family
was Protestant and emigrated to the United States, it is possible, if not
probable, that they were Huguenots driven out of western France." per "The Losie Family" sent to me by Garth Allen, July 11 2014. - Note: circa 1785; "The earliest known Canadian male ancestor is Lawrence Losie, born around 1750. He was a United Empire Loyalist and had been a blacksmith in the war of American Independence. After leaving New York State, he settled in Carrying Place (near Trenton, Ontario), now a little hamlet at the middle of a two mile road over which the Native
“Indians” and settlers carried their canoes, between the Bay of Quinte and Brighton, on Weller’s Bay." and "Lawrence Losie is believed to be related to a certain William Losie, the first regular itinerant Methodist minister who was in Prince Edward County in 1790." per "The Losie Family" sent to me by Garth Allen, July 11 2014.3 - Note*: circa 1790; Ontario; "Lawrence and his wife are both buried on the south east corner of what, in 1900, was known as the Reuben Young property. The earliest known male ancestor is Lawrence Losie, bon around 1750. He was a United Empire Loyalist. He was an army blacksmith in the war of American Independence, and leaving New York State, settled at Carrying Place, now a little hamlet at the middle of a two mile road, over which the Indians and early settlers carried their canoes between the Bay of Quinte and Weller's Bay. Trenton and Belleville are situated on the Bay of Quinte and Brighton on Weller's Bay.
The wife of Lawrence Losie was Jane Van Voorkes or Van Vorrach (pronounced Van Voorish). Some claim that the name Losie was originally "de Lacy", of French origin, while others maintain that it is German. From the fact that the family was protestant and emigrated to the United States, it is possible, if not probable, that they were Huguenots driven out of Western France. Lawrence Losie is believed to be related to a certain William Losie, the first regular itinerant Methodist Minister who came to Canada in 1790.
