- Residence: 1853; Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Candaa West; "Proud To Be From ‘The County’; Prince Edward, ‘The County.” For some reason, the mere words, whether we speak them ourselves or hear them spoken are enough to provoke a smile. We’ve all heard it a hundred times; a family who moved in thirty years ago still called ‘The new people” by the County-born-and-bred. “Pride of Possession.” Nowhere stronger than in the County. My great grandfather, Bill McConnell, was bom and raised just outside Wellington. He lived a total of seventy-eight years on this earth and spent the final fifty-five of them, continuously, in Brighton Township, yet Prince Edward remained always, “Back Home.” Near the end (1904) he became increasingly child-like. Today, he would likely be diagnosed as suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, but back then, they didn’t know about that
My Dad’s older brother once related to me how he remembered his grandfather in the final year of his life. On all too many days when supper was ready, Bill was not to be found. At these times, his daughter-in- law, my grandmother, would seek out my uncle and say, “Don, your grand dad’s wandered off again. He’s likely up over the hill. Be a good boy and run up and fetch him down for supper.” And the boy would do as bidden. He was all of six years old at the time. He said he always found the old man leaning on the same gatepost and staring off into space. Then he’d take him by the hand and lead him home. One winter night in that last year, his son (my grandfather, Oscar) awoke in the wee hours to the smell of smoke. It was coming from Bill’s bedroom. Oscar’s subsequent investigation revealed a fire (which had been rather carefully built) right on the bare floor beside his father’s bed. After he had doused the fire, cleaned up the charred, sodden mess and toted it outside, Oscar returned to his father’s bedside. “Dad, why in heaven’s name would you want to build a fire on the floor in the middle of your room?” “Well,” the old man admonished, T certainly couldn’t let my friends sit around here in the cold.” And he proceeded to point out and identify four of his neighbours he was convinced were seated about the room. Oscar said,
“Well Dad, I think the boys would probably like to be on their way now.” And he then addressed each empty space by the appropriate name and ushered these non-existent visitors out of the bedroom and down the stair. It was apparently not long after this episode that one noon at dinner (and out of the blue), Bill announced, “Son, I want to be buried back home.” Oscar was patient in his reply. “Dad, we’re just poor hard-working farm people. ‘Back home’ is a long old trek. We couldn’t afford the time or the money it would take to get your remains to there. I’m afraid you’ll have to be content with local interment’
Bill offered no comment but it was obvious he was not pleased. A few days later (and again, out of the blue), he informed Oscar, ‘Tve been thinking about what you said. I guess I’ll go along with it but I want it writ on my tombstone that that’s where I’m from.” If today, you take a drive west from Highway #30 along Telephone Road, after about a mile and a half or so, you’ll come to the Waite’s Cemetery on your right hand side. And if you walk straight north from the wrought-iron gate, you’ll very soon be treading on our family plot. The head-stone stands (leans) not far from the boundary fence. The first seven words inscribed thereupon read: William McConnell Native of Prince Edward County; 29 April 1997" from "Proud To Be From 'The County'", pg. 27& 28 in the book "Over My Shoulder, An Anthology of Brighton Memories", by Peter J.
