The earliest known male ancestor is Lawrence Losie, bon around 1750. He was a United Empire Loyalist. He was an army blacksmith in the war of American Independence, and leaving New York State, settled at Carrying Place, now a little hamlet at the middle of a two mile road, over which the Indians and early settlers carried their canoes between the Bay of Quinte and Weller's Bay. Trenton and Belleville are situated on the Bay of Quinte and Brighton on Weller's Bay.
    The wife of Lawrence Losie was Jane Van Voorkes or Van Vorrach (pronounced Van Voorish). Some claim that the name Losie was originally "de Lacy", of French origin, while others maintain that it is German. From the fact that the family was protestant and emigrated to the United States, it is possible, if not probable, that they were Huguenots driven out of Western France.
