Note: Wilson Brown suggests that there are two Johnson Marsh's we are dealing with, based on records for Johnson Marsh and sons John and George in Vermont as late as the early 1840's. Research in Ontario suggests that this is, in fact, the Johnson Marsh who was a son of Col. William Marsh and Sarah French. He and his family remained in Vermont until they obtained land grants in St. Vincent Twp, Grey Co., Ontario, namely Conc 12, Lot 6.

Sarah, Mary Ann and Almond Marsh are children of Johnson Marsh per GEDCOM of Kevin Handy, Mar 18, 2007.2,5 - Census*: 1820; Dorset, Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A.; 1820 Census: Johnson Marsh; 1 male under 10; 1 male over 45; 1 female over 45
Note: The two names just below Johnson Marsh are Alescon Curtis and John Sprague.9 - Note: 1820; East Dorset, Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A.; "The families in the 1820 census are in East Dorset on what is now Rt. 7A. (East Dorset is just part of Dorset, not a separate town.) It was quite good land, particularly to the west. The eastern mountains are Green Mountains, steep, with acidic soils, while Morse Hill and Dorset Mtn to the west are part of the Taconic range, and are less steep, and limey. The center of Dorset is what was called Dorset Mtn, now Mt. Aeolus, and its core is marble. The house William Marsh owned is still there, and I think Johnson was probably living in it in 1820. The Deming house, also mentioned in the census, is also still there. On the 1810 census, Col. Marsh himself is there and just north are his daughter Charlotte and husband, Jesse Southwick and 7 of their kids. (It is even possible it is the back of Marsh's house, which was older and had a separate entrance.)" per email from Wilson Brown, June 21 20102

Note: This Petition shows that Johnson Marsh lived for a few years at Port Hope before moving to St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co. He had acquired the Assignments for the Crown Land Grants that were due his sister Elizabeth (Marsh) Sexton and his sister-in-law Jane (Ostram) Marsh and was asking for an extension of the time stipulated for completing Settlement Duties. Jonathan Sexton had died much earlier and Elizabeth would die in 1841. Samuel Marsh, husband of Jane Ostram, had died in 1820.11 - Residence: 1843; Conc 12 Lot 6, St. Vincent Twp., Grey Co., Ontario; "BIOGRAPHY: "Asa had become unhappy with conditions in Carrying Place and Brighton, and had been looking for opportunities that might come along. Grey County had been open to prospective settlers for about twenty years. There was still crown land available and the prospects for successful venture looked good.
Asa applied for and received a land grant in St. Vincent Township. The grant had been obtained through his efforts at Toronto. The crown had granted him the east half of lots 7 and 8 in the XIIth Concessions. We think Asa had visited the land in 1858. He probably travelled by rail to Collingwood, and by steamship to Meaford. For the rest of the trip he may have rented a horse and wagon in Meaford and driven to his property. The 15, 16 sideroad, and the Xith line road and possibly part of 9, 10 sideroad would have been passable at that time."

Note: This info suggests C. W. Marsh was writing this in 1902. The Death Registration of Johnson Marsh shows that he was age 92 in 1872. Also, the location of Port Sarnia seems wrong. The Death Registration is simply St. Vincent Twp. where he lived - that's a long way away from Sarnia.

FindaGrave: Name: Stephen Young; BIRTH: 1777, Arlington, Bennington County, Vermont, USA; DEATH: 1849 (aged 71–72), Ontario, Canada; BURIAL: Carrying Place Cemetery,
Carrying Place, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada; MEMORIAL ID: 63595414; Note: Stephen Young was the son of Mrs. ? (Robinson) Young. He was the husband of Lucy (Marsh) Young. They were married in 1798 or 1799. Lucy died October 5, 1847. Stephen died at Carrying Place.;
September 26, 2013, Email from Wilson Brown - (fag contributor) -Wilson@professorsbrown.com; Stephen Young's father remains a mystery. He is not, however, Guy Henry Young. Stephen was born in Arlington, VT, in 1777 and married Lucy Marsh in Manchester, Vt about 1788 or 1799. The couple had at least one child there before moving to the Bay of Quinte in 1802. I can only guess that Lucy went to Vermont to visit, and perhaps help care for, her grandparents, Col. William and Sarah, and there met Stephen. Most researchers, including me at first, kept looking at Loyalist Youngs of which there are at least 3 families in the area. There was a Young family in Arlington, Vt, from Cornwall, CT. Age, location, and naming patterns suggest that Stephen is from that family and also connected with the Hawley family, but these are only hints. Several family members tell me that Stephen Young was on a trip to Montreal and that he died there. I haven't confirmed that. Stephen was not himself a Loyalist. His first farm was on the land of Jeremiah Marsh, Lucy's uncle, and only much later did Lucy herself, as the daughter of Matthias, a Loyalist, getting her 200 acres. I just had a thought that Stephen's not getting a grant of land is an indication that his father was not a Loyalist. Interestingly, only one of Col. William's ten children married a Loyalist - Samuel William who married Jannetje (Jane) Ostrum. I am certain, however Stephen is not from Henry Young's family. - Note*: circa 1778; "Young Family Bible: Says that Stephen Young was the son of Colonel Young of the British Army who was granted 7,000 acres in Upper Canada. This is highly unlikely. Stephen Young was very likely born in Vermont, certainly married in Vermont and came up to Canada after 1802, settling on lands that appear to be lands secured by William Marsh, his grandfather, or else by Matthias Marsh.
Ancestral File AFN:11J8-IRR says Stephen was the son of John Young, but I do not have any evidence beyond that statement. So far I have found no convincing evidence of who Stephen's father.
Stephen Young is not a member of the family of Guy Henry Young from Long Island, who was an officer and who settled in Prince Edward County, farther east on the peninsula. He is not a descendant of Robert Young, a British Navy captain, who settled near the Marshes. It is unlikely he is the son of John, since he didn't name a child John. Nor was Stephen the son of a Palatine Jung/Young family that settled on the Niagara Peninsula. Stephen Young should also not be confused with a Stephen Young and his brother, Peter, who settled at Fredericksburgh, across the tip of the peninsula from Prince Edward County. They are older and poorer. They did move to Picton, but they are not the same family." per "Descendants of Stephen Young" sent to me by Wilson Brown, March 28, 2007.5 - Note: 1778; Manchester, Vermont, U.S.A.; "Stephen Young with his half-brother, Asa Weller, came to the Carrying Place about 1802: they being the first settlers at Weller's Bay. He was born at Manchester, Vermont, in 1778, and died in 1849. He married Lucy Marsh, daughter of the old Sydney pioneer, Matthias Marsh. She was born at Manchester, Vermont, in 1785, and died in 1847. Both are bu1Tied in the Can·ying Place
Cemetery." Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, pg. 41.
Note: Half-brother of Asa Weller??? Have seen nothing to explain this - yet. Also, we know Asa Weller came to the CArring Place as early as 1789, then came for good in 1792. Stephen Young was in Pownal, Bennington Co., Vermont per the 1800 US Federal Census, so they did not come at the same time. (Dan Buchanan, Oct 9 2024) - Census: 1800; Pownal, Bennington Co., Vermont, U.S.A.; 1800 Census: Stephen Young; 1 male 0 to 10; 1 male 26 to 45; 1 female 0 to 10; 1 female 26 to 45 (1800 Census: Town of Pownal, Bennington Co., Vermont, pg. 4 of 7 - ancestry.com)
Note: This matches the family of Stephen Young and Lucy Marsh in 1800 before they moved to Upper Canada - per "Descendants of Stephen Young" sent to me by Wilson Brown, March 28, 2007.6,5 - Residence: 1802; Murray Twp., Carrying Place, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Stephen Young, half-brother to Asa Weller, has arrived to join his family at the Carrying Place, and is immediately invited to join his brother in the profitable business of the Overland Railway Portage." from page 378 of "Hans Waltimeyer" by Jane Bennett Goddard, UE, 1980.
Note: Have not been able to determine how Stephen Young and Asa Weller might be "half-brothers". Any ideas? (Dan Buchanan, Oct 6 2024)10 - Immigration*: after 1802; Upper Canada; " ... came to Canada after 1802 ... " per "Descendants of Stephen Young" sent to me by Wilson Brown, March 28, 2007.5
