Residence*: 1820; Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., Upper Canada; "Frederick Fanning of Sidney, a settler in Canada having arrived in 1811, and member of a renowned early family of Connecticut, U.S.A., and John Covert, another prominent settler at the Carrying Place, originally, and now relocated at Coburg, have built and set into service an extensive brigade of batteaux. They will also form a line of Durham boats, to perform in the run to Montreal. Thus is now the development of regular transportation, and the awakening to the country's needs of carriage of goods and persons over vast distances. These two men will finally jointly own a steamboat, to be named the " Iroquois". Their batteaux service will extend from now till 1830, serving a decade of transport to the Colony. The "Iroquois" and Fanning's and Covert's Durham boats, on the St. Lawrence line, will run the rapids of Lachine on their own; upon the upriver journey, these vessels will be pulled up from the tow path by Indians, driving oxen. Goods are shipped down and passengers brought up, now mostly Irish immigrants, whose hard lot at home in Ireland is causing them to increasingly seek a new life in the wilds of Canada. Long after steamboats are working upon the waters of Quintie, the Lake and the St. Lawrence, batteaux lines will continue between Belleville and Montreal.
