  • Note: 17 September 1886; Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; "This firm also submitted a bid to construct three steel road bridges over the canal at a cost of $5900 each. However, the contract went instead to Robert Weddell and the Trenton Bridge and Engine Works who offered to build three composite timber and iron structures at $6739 each. In making this decision, John Page, the Chief Engineer of the Department of Railways and Canals stated that a timber structure would be more durable and could be repaired more easily by local work men. While this may have been a consideration, the real reason seems to have been Weddell's prominent position in the area and his close association with local politicians. For in mid August when it was learned that Weddell had applied for the work, the Reeve and Municipal Council of Brighton, along with the Trenton Town Council, wrote to the Minister of Railways and Canals to endorse his tender. Most important however, was Weddell's Conservative connections in the region. According to E. Cochrane, the Conservative member for Northumberland East, in a letter to John Pope, "Anything that can be done to give R. Weddell of Trenton the contract for the superstructures on the bridges on the Murray Canal will be a great benefit to our party in the Riding as he is a man that will do anything that he can to assist us." No doubt this settled the matter fairly quickly, and Weddell's contract with the Department was signed on September 17, 1886." the Powles Report, page 28 & 29.15
  • Note*: 1888; Trenton Bridge and Engine Works, Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; "TRENTON BRIDGE AND ENGINE WORKS, Robert Weddell, Proprietor. Among the well-known industries of Canada is that of the Trenton Bridge and Engine Works, which are located at Trenton. This business was established here 14 years ago by Mr. Robert Weddell, and from a comparatively small beginning has grown to its present extensive proportions. This has been due in a great measure to the push, energy and ability of the proprietor, as well as to the excellent quality of the work done, which has gained a high reputation throughout the country. The plant located in Trenton consists of a boiler shop, blacksmith shop, foundry, machine shop, engine house and bridge building establishment. The works are fitted up with all the latest and most improved machinery and appliances. The firm manufacture steel and iron bridges of every description, which have been universally adopted by many counties, railroads, municipalities and the Department of Railways and Canals throughout the Dominion. They also manufacture turntables, iron piers and roofs, stationary and marine engines and boilers, dredges, tugs, steamboats, excavators and contractors' supplies of all kinds, while a specialty is made of girder and structural work. A large staff of skilled practical workmen are employed throughout the year under able and practical management. When the works were burned down in 1875, they were immediately rebuilt on a much larger scale owing to the increasing business, and so it has been from that time forward, improvements and additions have been constantly made. Owing to the excellent position which the Trenton Bridge and Engine Works occupy for shipping facilities, cheap rates enable them to compete successfully with any other concern in Canada. They have the advantage of being on one of the best shipping points on the Grand Trunk Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway, as well as being at the head of the Bay of Quinte and entrance to the Murray and Trent Valley Canals. The Trenton works are conducted by Mr. Robert Weddell, manager and proprietor, and Mr. J. D. Evans, engineer." from Trenton Directory, page 284, not show a year. Note: Calculating that this directory was done in 1888 or maybe early 1889 - there is no date that I can see. Looking at the events listed here, we can see things in 1888 already happened and things in 1889 are anticipated. Also, if we go back 14 years from 1888, we come to 1874 as the year that Robert Weddell established the business in Trenton. The big fire in 1875 was very soon afterward, but, as it says here, caused them to rebuild, bigger and better. (Dan Buchanan, June 20 2022)
  • Note: 19 May 1888; Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; "A Trenton paper which ardently supports the fad and is violently opposed to the N. P., gives the following testimony to the great benefits which the protective policy has conferred upon the town in which it is published: WEDDELL BRIDGE AND MACHINEWORKS, The Weddell Bridge and Machine Words is one of the flourishing institutions of Trenton. Starting some 12 years ago, it was burned down once. Since rebuilding it has quadrupled its capacity for work, the latest ordered tool being a steam hammer. Its first important start was in connection with the Central Ontario Railway and Iron mines and then the Murray Canal and Bridge building. The proprietor, Mr. Robert Weddell, employs inside the works, between 30 and 40 hands who have to work over time to keep up with the orders under contract, and a large gang of men outside putting up finished work. He pays out from $1,200 to $1,500 a month and has turned out the last three months between thirty and forty thousand dollars' worth of work. The orders on hand will tax their energies till next fall. Besides general machinery, millers' contracts and repairing they have constructed the following bridges:
Three composite bridges on the Murray Canal for the Dominion Gov., three on the Trent Valley Canal, oneat Carlton Place 12 ft. wide, 240 ft. span, one of the finest in the Dominion; two on Little Nation river 150 ft. span steel bridges, roadway and sidewalk. A steel bridge at Marmora 125 ft. span, and have a contract for a bridge at Port Robertson 204 ft. span, 4000 ft. of piling, structure and superstructure. We are please to be able to make this statement as an evidence of the growth of Trenton and its suitability for the location of a large manufacturing establishment." Amanda's email is: Hello Dick and Dan, There is a mention of Weddell in relation to dredging in 1890, but that was in Belleville: https://archive.org/details/intelligencer-weekly-september-1890/page/n15/mode/2up?q=weddell
There is an Intelligencer article in May 1888 about his company in Trenton, but it seems to be more concerned with building bridges than dredging: https://archive.org/details/intelligencer-may-1888/page/n63/mode/2up?q=%22robert+weddell%22
This is confirmed in an article of 23 August 1888 about the progress of the canal: https://archive.org/details/intelligencer-august-1888/page/n65/mode/2up?q=%22robert+weddell%22

  • Residence: 23 August 1888; The Murray Canal Works, Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The road bridges, two of which are completed, swing on a huge central pier protected on either side by other piers, and are built by Mr. Robert Weddell, Jr., at this bridge works at Trenton; and bear out in their beauty and strength the great reputation which Mr. Weddell has earned by the quality of his work of being one of the foremost bridge builders in Canada. The railroad bridge, a fine structure, reflecting great credit on the builders, the Dominion Bridge Company of Hamilton, is also built of steel and swings in the same manner as the road bridges." from a newspaper article by "Canalis" in the Belleville Intelligencer, Aug 23 1888. (Belleville Newspaper Microfilm Archives: Daily Intelligencer Mar. 1, 1888 - Apr. 9, 1889, MR No. 46, OCR of original page image.)
Note: Robert Weddell, Jr. was 38 at this time, so probably directly involved in the operations of building the superstructures of the road bridges for the Murray Canal. His father was 66 at this time, still owner of the company and probably involved at a management level. The only documents I have seen do not specify Sr. or Jr., so I assume Sr. at this time.
