  • Note*: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. Obituary: WILLIAM AUGUSTUS RICHARDS; It becomes our painful duty to report the demise of the above named beloved brother in the church – than whom few men have lived more respected, or died more generally lamented. He departed this life at his residence on the Percy Circuit, on the 7th day of February 1875, having the day before celebrated his 71st birthday. He was born in the County of Prince Edward, was the son of the late Lieutenant-Colonel Owen Richards, who was an officer under the lamented General Sir Isaac Brock. The son inheriting a martial spirit, early in his day became connected with the Militia of his county, and by his efficiency and unquestionable loyalty, was eventually commissioned Lieutenant-Colonel in the Prince Edward Militia. His Christian piety added greatly to the lustre of his other virtues, and was the chief glory of his character. He was converted in the township of Ameliasburg, July 3rd, 1830; joined the Church a week before under the ministry of Revs. D. Wright and J. Carroll; appointed class leader in 1830; local preacher in 1843, under Rev. C. Vandusen. As class-leader he had the full confidence of the members, and was preverbially [sic] successful. As a local preacher he was very practical – enforcing the necessity of believing and practising [sic] gospel doctrines – always giving evidence that he felt the responsibility and importance of his subject. His congregations heard him gladly – being noted for his punctuality, (as far as possible), in filling all his appointments, he was sure of a congregation. No local preacher in these parts filled the place of the ministers of the circuit as often as he did. His readiness to assist them in every way in his power will be gratefully remembered by them. He was at home on the missionary platform; liberal in the support of missions, and all the institutions of the Church; an influencing advocate of temperance and identified with several organizations for the promotion of the Cause. While particularly attached to the Wesleyan Methodist Church (owing all to it under God, he was ready to assist other Churches, when it did not interfere with the ordinances of his own Church. His praise is in all the evangelical Churches here. Liberality to the poor was a prominent trait in his character. None were turned empty away. They have missed him. To many of them he was their spiritual advisor – attending them in their afflictions and burying their dead. His own life was far from being a smooth one. Afflictions, bereavements, and sore trials fell to his lot. The morning of his decease there was nothing denoting his sudden removal. He had been two days only confined to the house. He then gave instructions to his family the course by them to be pursued with reference to the present and future world. Shortly after he became restless, and in a minute had breathed his last. The secret of his success was acknowledging the Lord in all his ways. His steps were directed by Him. He made secret prayer a business." per "William A. Richards" bio of same, sent

  • Residence: 6 December 1826; Hallowell Twp., Prince Edward Co., Upper Canada; "As a child of the Loyalist Owen Richards, William was entitled to 200 acres of land in Upper Canada. William’s relationship to his father Owen Richards is proven by both his petition for this land, where he states he is the son of Owen Richards, and by his obituary. To obtain this land he had to take an Oath of Allegiance, which he did on September 26, 1823. In 1825, he applied to receive the 200 acres. On January 25 of that year he petitioned as, “the son of Owen Richards of the Township of Hallowell in the Midland District, a U.E. Loyalist,” to the Crown to “grant unto him two hundred acres of the waste Lands of the crown.” William Richards took possession of a lot in Hallowell on December 6, 1826." per "William A.
