Note: Catherine Bates, age 80, was Catherine Vandervoort who had married William F. Bates and lived for a time in Cape Vincent Twp., Jefferson Co., NY. Her niece, Melvenda (Melinda) Vandervoort, would travel to her aunt's farm with Dr. William Henry King in November of 1858 in order to evade arrest in light of the death of Dr. King's wife, Sarah Lawson, from apparent poinsoning. In any case, Sarah's brother, Clinton Lawson, was deputized and tracked them down, arresting Dr. King as he hid "under the straw of a hog's nest" at the Bates farm. The accused was brought back to Brighton, Ontario and taken on to Cobourg where the trial and hanging would take place the next year. Catherine Bates would come back to Sidney Township after this episode and it looks like her hustand, William Bates, went off to California along with some of both the Bates and Vandervoort family. Melinda married a local man, Henry Ryerson Smith in Michigan and moved to Iowa, before taking up residence in Los Angeles, California.
