Unidentified Newsclipping - 1888; CATON.--This beloved brother was born near Napanee, and died at his residence in Newburgh, on Sabbath, the 12th of February, 1888. He had been a highly esteemed member of the Methodist Church for over half a century, and the recording steward for more than thirty years, as well as class-leader and pew steward for several years. Best of all, he was a consecrated man of God. He was a man of large Christian sympathies and intelligent views in church work, and always faithful to the trusts confided to him. Next to his dear family and his God he loved his brethren and the institutions of our beloved Zion, and cheerfully and liberally supported all the claims for benevolent work. He had for many years been a leading merchant in this place. Subject at times to great loss and trial, especially at the great fire here last fall, when his comforable home and mercantile house were consumed. This revolution, together with a severe affliction, resulted in the trial of his faith, which was more precious than gold tried in the fire, as he realized that in Christ all fulness dwells. When he had recovered from that illness, and resumed business again, we hoped for his presence and counsel for a few years longer. In this we were soon to be disappointed. The last work of his life was in his official relation as recording steward at our last Quarterly Official Board Meeting, where he manifested so much interest and solicitude for the good cause. At the close he complained of being somewhat impaired, and rapidly grew worse, until his change came. The day previous to his death he took a most affectionate and Christian farewell of his beloved wife and children, commending them to the God of all grace, he leading them in one of his favorite songs of praise, his eldest son and amiable companion joining in prayer. "The place was privileged above the common walks of virtuous life, quite on the verge of heaven." He spoke to them of the royal presence of the King with him. He said to the writer, "I am in good hands. I have a precious Saviour--the world's Saviour! All is well." Thus passed away an affectionate husband, a kind father (beautiful in his home life), an influential citizen, highly prized by a large circle of friends, esteemed by many ministers, who have enjoyed his society and congenial home. His funeral obsequies were conducted by the writer, assisted by the Rev. D. S. Houck, and Rev. Mr. Allen (Presbyterian), in the presence of a very large audience on Tuesday, the 14th of February, 1888. Written by Rev. James Curts (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/157567577/miles-caton.)1
