Note: Brighton became a town and appointed a Postmaster in 1831 - per The Toby Book.^3,4 He "Maxwell Tobey in his historical work states that a post office opened in 1816, with John Singleton acting as postmaster although he was not appointed as such. He continued to act until 1831, when the government officially appointed Thomas D. Sandford as postmaster and "Brighton" as chosen as the name of the village." and "In 1835, Joseph Lockwood became Postmaster and the Post Office was located on Main Street in what was known as the Lockwood Block (23 - 25 Main Street). Joseph was also a saddle bag minister or circuit rider (serving the parishoners at the present Trinity St. Andrew's Church on Prince Edward Street. His son, Thomas C. Note: The Toby Book also states that Joseph Lockwood was the first Postmaster when Brighton was formed in 1831, with the name coming from his ancestral home in Brighton, England.
