Edward Cook1

M, b. circa 1735
Edward Cook was born circa 1735; Edward Cook is shown to be one of the earliest settlers in Conc 4 & 5 of Thurlow per page 16 of The Rambling River. I have nothing yet to prove he is the father of William Cook, but land registry records certainly suggest either that or some other close connection. (Dan Buchanan, May 25 2021.)1 He married ? ? circa 1760; per Rambling River, pg 16.1 Edward Cook lived in May 1789 at Conc 4, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; "In the spring of 1789, a party of about fifty, reached the bay. They were all refugee loyalists, and most of them had been since the close of the war in the States, looking up their families, and arranging to take them "to Cataraqui." This party settled in Sidney and
Thurlow. Those who settled in Thurlow, finding no land available at the front, prepared to ascend the river. Among them were John Taylor, William Reed, with four sons, John, William, Samuel, and
Solomon; Richard Smith, Cavelry, Robert Wright, John Longwell, Sherard, Zedic Thrasher, Asa Turner, Stephen and Laurence Badgley, Solomon Hazleton, Archibald McKenzie, McMichael, William Cook, and Russell Pitman." from page 491 of "History of the Settlement of Upper Canada by William Canniff, 1869.
"The first large group of settlers, numbering about 50, crossed over from Prince Edward County about 1789 (no doubt making use of Mr. Meyer’s batteaux service). As they arrived late in the day, they polled their batteaux up the river to its first bend (at Cannifton Road). There they camped for the night and the next day pushed on up the river to find their new homes. They settled mostly on the 4th and 5th Concessions close to the river. Among the earliest settlers are listed Russell Pitman, Archibald McKenzie, John McMichael, John Macintosh, Edward Cook, William Reed and his sons — Samuel, William, Solomon and John — the Yeomans, Gideon Turner, John Taylor, Richard Smith and sons, John Longwell, Samuel Sherwood, John Frederick, Colquhoun Frederick, William Johnson, Sgt. John Carscallen, John Fairman and others." from page 16 of The Rambling River: History of Thurlow Township by Mary G.      John Taylor was born in April 1759 at Columbia Co., New York, U.S.A; Date of Baptism Apr 15 1759 & location Claverack per Baptism Record. Date 1762 & location Kinderhook per family tree of psnam on ancestry.ca, May 25 2021.
"George Taylor "thinks his father [John Taylor] was born on the Hudson, may have been born in Scotland" and "was 14 years old when the Revolutionary war commenced." If 14 in 1777 he would be born in 1763. This is in conflict with John Taylor's burial record that states he was 76 when he died in 1829; thus would have been born in 1753. However his baptism is in April 1759 and it was usual to baptize shortly after birth. The children appear to all have been baptized as they were born. Therefore 1759 is accepted as his birth year near Claverack, NY, and he would therefore have been 18 when war broke out in 1777." from Pioneers of the Bay of Quinte by Randy Saylor, Apr 2014, updated 2019, a link to this found May 25 2021 at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~saylormowbray/genealogy/taylorjohn.html.1,2,3 He was baptized on 15 April 1759 at Claverack; Baptism Record: "John ... John Taylor & Christina McCarty; Wit.: Benony & Rebecca Smith" US Dutch Reformed Church Records, Claverack, Vol. 1 Box 1, 1759, pg. 63 of 147, ancestry.ca.2 He "[John Taylor] was left at home with his widowed mother, in Kinderhook. He was however taken by a press gang of Burgoyne's Army when at the plow. His mother didn't know it and was under the impression that the Indians had taken him. She did not know where he was, indeed thought him dead until the close of the war. Taylor was in the army for 7 years and as in many engagements. He had 3 wounds at least, one in the calf of the leg right, caused by sabre, one through the left arm cause by a ball. At the close of the war he came to Canada by way of New Brunswick, walked on snow shoes from St Johns to Sorel. Four 4 others started with him, 3 of whom perished by the way." from Pioneers of the Bay of Quinte by Randy Saylor, Apr 2014, updated 2019, a link to this found May 25 2021 at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~saylormowbray/genealogy/taylorjohn.html in 1776 at New York, U.S.A..3 He "A number of records state that John Taylor was a corporal with the Kings American Regiment (KAR). The KAR was disbanded in St John's, New Brunswick in 1783 and that is consistent with the story that he immediately made his way overland to Sorel, Quebec and eventually to Thurlow. In 1789 the Land Board states he came that year and grants him 200 acres but not as a Loyalist - this is probably the lot 12, con 4 that he receives in Thurlow." from Pioneers of the Bay of Quinte by Randy Saylor, Apr 2014, updated 2019, a link to this found May 25 2021 at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~saylormowbray/genealogy/taylorjohn.html in 1783 at New Brunswick.3 He "In 1783 he came up the St. Lawrence to Cataraqui, and thence walked up the bay as far as the mouth of the Moira River, accompanied by one William McMullen. Ascending the Moira, he chose the land, where is now the 4th concession of Thurlow, the "Holstead farm." He lived here a few months, but the Indians drove him away, declaring the river belonged to them. He then bought lot No. 5 at the front, of Captain Singleton, property which yet bears his name. John Taylor married the daughter of a U. E. Loyalist by the name of Russell." from page 123 of "History of the Settlement of Upper Canada" by William Canniff.
Note: As usual with Canniff, this is an entertaining mixture of fact, lore and anecdotal history. John Taylor did not come to the Moira River by himself but available facts show that he did acquire land at Lot 12, Conc 4, Thurlow. Conflict with the Indigenous inhabitants is also confirmed, and he decided to go to the shore and acquired some land from George Singleton in the Broken Front, Lot 6 (not lot 5). He acquire numerous other lots, as did members of his family. in 1783 at Conc 4, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Upper Canada.4 He lived in 1784 at Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Upper Canada; "John Taylor, Capt. George Singleton, Lt. Israel Ferguson all settled early at the mouth of the Moira River. Capt. Singleton married Anne McArthur, daughter of Charles McArthur. Taylor bought 200 acres from Capt. That in the year 1777, Sir Henry Clinton sent your petitioners brother Daniel as an Express to General Burgoyne, through the American Territories. But unfortunately being surrounded and falling into the rebellious enemy's hands (after swallowing the ball which contained the Express ) the ever suspicious and outrageous enemy with the assistance of some of their most skillful Physicians, by forcing on him an extraordinary large quantity a emetic , recovered the said ball which contained the express by which means he was condemned to be put to death which he suffered on the gallows. Thus he fell, a glorious victim to his loyalty and good discipline! That the aforesaid Cornelius Taylor the only surviving brother of your petitioner died in the northern army which was commanded by General Burgoyne, just before they were unhappily captured by the Americans at Saratoga. That your petitioner the only survivor remained in the British army to the end of said war. That your petitioner, his mother and three sisters came into the province as early as the year 1788, where they now reside (after you're petitioners having been wounded in his Majesty's service whereby he lost the use of his right arm) and had only the consolation to mourn the loss of their relatives. Your petitioners supporting his widowed mother, who is for advancement in life and (after so many and severe sufferings) scarcely able to support her scarcely animated body any longer. Those only who have lost such near relatives can (in adversity) justly estimate the value of them when they are gone. Therefore your petitioner humbly prays that your Excellency will be pleased to grant him his mother and sisters such quantities of land and other privileges as true loyalist sufferers merit and as your Excellency may deem meet and as your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray. 4th February 1807; Two affadavits sworn before Alexander Chisholm JP" from Pioneers of the Bay of Quinte by Randy Saylor, Apr 2014, updated 2019, a link to this found May 25 2021 at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~saylormowbray/genealogy/taylorjohn.html
