Item 4 in list of improvements to lots in Percy, part of Augustus Jones report to Peter Russell re status of township settlement. Asa Danforth and Aaron Greeley were accused of fraud as a result, since few names matched the reports from them. His name appears on a petition for a land grant in Upper Canada dated January, 1793. A petition was made to Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1793 by a number of American citizens who wished to be granted a township for settlement purposes in Upper Canada. They were given land in Percy Township. Jesse Spalding died abt. 1800 in Percy Twp. Thomas Major Spalding was born in Massacheusetts on the 15th of August, 1780. He was the second son of Jesse Spalding. He married Ann Merriman (Merriam) who was born in 1783 in Connecticut. Thomas and Ann had eleven children. In 1802, Thomas was issued a land grant for a parcel of land in Haldimand (Grafton), Northumberland Twp. Thomas built a Georgian two-storey brick house in 1834. Another house was later built next door in 1843 for his daughter, Mary and her husband, John Steele. Mary operated a girls' boarding school in this home. The Steele house was declared a historical building in 1989. In 1811, Spalding's Inn, was advertised as a half way house between Kingston and York on the Danforth Road. Thomas Major Spalding was both an innkeeper, a brewer and operated a brick yard. Ann Merriman (Merriam) died in Grafteon Dec. 26, 1844 and was buried in St. George's Anglican Cemetery.
