I am guessing that there is another generation in here. William Weller's father was a David Weller but the David Weller (1726-1795) died before William was born in 1799 so there may be a son David in there who was William's father. Hope to find out more about this but am going to add William Weller to my database this way for now. (Dec 11 2015, Dan Buchanan)

During the 1840s and 1850s Cobourg and Port Hope were competing as ports of outlet for the trade of the townships inland from the lake, with roads and railways as determining factors. As mayor of Cobourg in 1850, 1851, and 1863, and as a town councilor from 1852 to 1855 and again in 1857, Weller was deeply involved in Cobourg’s attempt to establish its supremacy. Council borrowed $12,000 in 1848 to build Victoria Hall, the town hall, purchased in 1850 the Port Hope to Rice Lake Road for $14,400, allotting $6,000 for improvements, purchased the Cobourg Harbour Company for $40,000 and voted $24,000 for its completion, and between 1852 and 1858 bought shares in and made loans to the Cobourg and Peterborough Railway Company in the amount of $671,775. Note: Interestingly enough, this sizeable book (bound with a duotang) contains what its title says “Descendants of Asa Weller” but the first few pages are not about Asa Weller at all but contain the Quit claim Deed of William Weller of Cobourg, who was a cousin. This document serves to confirm that William Weller’s father was David Weller and then we can see that David Weller and Eliakim Weller, Asa Weller’s father, were brothers. on 13 December 1859 at Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Canada West.21 He "1860 Sept 7; Prince of Wales opened Victoria Hall; Nancy Martin says Caroline danced with him; (not in Guillet's list) "Hayley" says "Tinnie" did; "retiring rooms had been luminously furnished by Mrs. Weller from her own home" on note card in Madelein Muntz Collection, St. Catharines Museum, Oct 5, 2016. Frazer." from http://ontariogenealogy.com/Northumberland/cobourgpresbyterianchurchhistory.html on 14 December 1862 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, King St., Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Canada West. He was "On Monday last, W. Weller, Esq., was elected Mayor of Cobourg of the ensuing year, without opposition." from the Cobourg Sentinal newspaper archive microfilm, Cobourg Public Library, issue dated Dec 27 1862.
"The meeting for the nomination of candidates for the Mayoralty, held in accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Act, in the Town Hall, at ten o’clock last Monday morning ended in the manner which we, in common with most of our fellow townsmen, anticipated it would. There was, however, a remarkable absence of anything like interest. At ten o’clock when the meeting was opened by David Brodie, Esq., the worthy Town Clerk, scarcely a dozen persons were present. The proceedings were simple enough. Mr. Brodie briefly explained the object of the meeting and his readiness to receive nominations. It was them Moved by Asa A. Burnham, Esq., seconded by Mr. Finlay, That Wm. Weller Esq. be the Mayor of Cobourg, for the year 1863. An hour having elapsed without any other nomination, the Town Clerk declared Mr. Weller to be duly elected Mayor for the ensuing year. Mr. Weller then came forward and briefly returned thanks for the honor conferred on him, and expressed his intentions to discharge the duties of the office faithfully and well. He promised to do his utmost to keep the taxes at as low a figure as was consistent with the maintaining of the honor of the town. The meeting then quietly dissolved. We do not remember ever seeing so much apathy in regard to any public matter as on this occasion, and we must candidly say that we do not think it very creditable to the public spirit of the town. We account for it in part, by the fact that the whole thing was well known to be cut and dried before hand. But this does not wholly account for it, because we see similar frigid indifference manifested as to the composition of our Town Council, which is undoubtedly a much more important matter.
Apropos of this, we may mention that we here that W. I. Stanton, Esq. has been named as a candidate for the South Ward. For the West Ward, Messrs. J. H. Dumble, Jos. Pidgeon, and Wm. Hargraft have been named, and in the east Ward we understand that G. S. Daintry, Esq. is likely to take the place of Mr. Ough, who has expressed a disinclination to sit any longer at the Council table. We believe Messrs. Payne and Densmore will again offer themselves, and we hope that Mr. Sutherland will also allow himself to be re-nominated. We may be able to say something more definite in regard to this important subject next week." from the Cobourg Star newspaper archive microfilm, Cobourg Public Library, issue dated Dec 27 1862. on 22 December 1862 at Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Canada West.23,24 He was "As mayor of Cobourg in 1850, 1851, and 1863, and as a town councilor from 1852 to 1855 and again in 1857.. Weller, Esq., Mayor of this town, which event took place at his residence at half-past seven o’clock on Monday morning last, after about three weeks illness. Mr. Weller was on or our oldest and most influential citizens, a thorough business man, and served this town in various official capacities with honor to himself and credit to the town. He was elected President of the Board of Police shortly after the incorporation of the town, and has on different occasions enjoyed the confidence of his fellow townsmen in being elected to the office of Mayor of the town. He was in the 65th year of his age. His funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon the principal place of business being closed during the hour of interment. He was buried with Masonic honors, he being a distinguished member of that Order." article in the Cobourg Sentinal newspaper archives on microfilm, issue September 26, 1863, copied at Cobourg Public Library, July 4, 2016.

"During his third term as Mayor, he died at his lakeside home 'The Hill,' and was buried with full Masonic honors." per FindaGrave. Date Sep 21 1863 per family tree of Ingrid Williams on ancestry.com, Dec 11 2015.1,23 He was buried on 23 September 1863 at Old Kirk Burying Ground, Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Canada West; "Stone in S.E. corner of Old Kirk burying ground, Cobourg, Ont; no stone on Wm. Weller's grave. This is his first wife." Note written under the picture of memorial of Mercy Weller, William Weller's first wife, taken by Madelein Muntz in the Old Kirk burying ground before it was destroyed. Notice it was an overgrown area when the picture was taken. This note tells us specifically that William Weller's grave was here but there was no stone for him at that time. "Birth: May 13, 1799, Vermont, USA; Death: Sep. 21, 1863; Cobourg, Ontario, Canada; Son of David Weller* he and his father came to Prescott, Ontario from St. Lawrence County, New York in the 1820's and established an extensive stagecoach line in the province. In addition to passengers, they obtained contracts to carry the Royal Mail** as well. By the early 1830's, William had moved to Cobourg where he established a repair shop for his business as well as a factory to produce carriages for sale. His father is reported to have died at Cobourg. William served nine times on the Police Board, which operated the town prior to its incorporation; and was the first Mayor of the town, serving two additional terms thereafter. Although born in Vermont, it appears his family moved to Canton, New York for some years before his coming into Canada. William's sister Laurene (wife of Linus Joy Munson), was born at Canton; both siblings were married there, and both began their families at Canton as well. William married, firstly, Mercy Wilcox of Canton on 31 May 1820. After her death, he married, secondly, Margaret McKechnie. He is alleged to have had eleven children by each of his wives. During his third term as Mayor, he died at his lakeside home 'The Hill,' and was buried with full Masonic honors. (Note: William is often confused with another William Weller, a son of Asa, whose family resided at Carrying Point, Ontario. However, that William was thirty years older and died earlier than William of Cobourg. The two Weller families not immediately related.) *per Vermont land deed 13 Dec 1859 available online at Cobourg Library website; **business records are available at the Library & Archives of Canada; Family links:Spouse: Mercy Wilcox Weller (____ - 1843) Children: Lorenzo Reed Weller (1822 - 1901)*36,255,255,255]John Laing Weller (1862 - 1932)*; Burial: Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery; Cobourg, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada; Created by: Barbara Haines; Record added: Mar 28, 2014; Find A Grave Memorial# 127048731" http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=127048731&ref=acom

Mercy Wilcox was born on 2 November 1804 at Winchester, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, U.S.A; Date 1804 per Burial Info. Date June 29, 1803 & Location Winchester, Litchfield Co., Conn. per Card 001 of Madelein Muntz Collection. Date Nov 2 1804 per List of William Weller's family, from the Scrapbook section of the Madelien Muntz Collection, St. Catharines Museum, seen Oct 5, 2016; Ref.: ALV.IV.4, 2006.73.873. Location US per 1891 Census for daughter Caroline H. Weller. Location Saint Lawrence Co., NY per family tree of jameswaters187 on ancestry.com, Dec 28 2015.
Note: I have not put Daniel Wilcox in here as Mercy Wilcox's father because I do not see documentation that this is the correct Mercy Wilcox. There is a Mercy Wilcox, b. 1804 in Conn., dau. of Daniel Wilcox and Mehitable Wright. But someone has a death date for her in NY and I do not see this Wilcox family living anywhere near Canton, NY, which is where Mercy Wilcox is said to "of" in her marriage. Is this the right Wilcox family???2,3,4,5 As of 31 May 1820,her married name was Weller. She married William Weller, son of David Weller and ? ?, on 31 May 1820 at Canton, Saint Lawrence Co., New York, U.S.A; "1821, May 31st, William Weller married Mercy Wilcox" on note card in Madelein Muntz Collection, St. Catharines Museum Oct 5, 2016. Ref.: ALV.V.1. (1820 or 1821?? - probably 1820 - first child Jan 1822.)
"William married, firstly, Mercy Wilcox of Canton on 31 May 1820. After her death, he married, secondly, Margaret McKechnie. He is alleged to have had eleven children by each of his wives." from FindaGrave - ancestry.com
"William Weller was born in 1798 in Heinzburg, Vermont. At the age of twenty-two, he married Mercy Wilcox, daughter of a wealthy and prominent man from New York. After his marriage, Weller attended law school. After his graduation, he came to Canada and practiced law and land speculation.” from Cobourg Public Library - Weller-Family-08-09.2,5 Mercy Wilcox appeared on the census of 1834 at Conc A, Lot 16, Hamilton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; 1834 Census: Name: William Weller; Location: Conc A, Lot 16, 1/4 acres cult; People: 4 males over 15; 1 male under 15; 2 females over 15; 2 females under 15 (Cobourg Census Online) (Note: Mercy would be one of two females over 15.) She died on 20 August 1843 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario, at age 38; Date Aug 20 1843 per Memorial. Date Aug 20 1843 per Burial Info. "DIED; At Toronto, (to which place she had gone on a visit) on Sunday, the 29th, instant, after a short illness, which she endured with examplary patience and resignation, Mercy, wife of William Weller, Esq., of Cobourg, in the 39th year of her age. She has left a numerous family to regret her loss." from the Cobourg Star, August 23, 1843, copied from microfilm at Cobourg Public Library, Aug 5, 2016.
Note: The death notice in the paper gives the date as "Sunday, the 29th instant" which would appear to be a mistake. The Sunday before Aug 23 is the 20th. The Burial info shows the date August 20 1843.
"Mercy Wilcox died unexpectedly before the end of August 1843. Earlier in the month, before her death, an entry in an account book of Thomas Clench, a cabinetmaker, shows that a small hearse was provided to William Weller on August 3. No birth or death information is available, presumably for an infant. Clench was again called upon to provide a hearse, this time in August 20, when Mercy died. Her obituary in the Cobourg Star and Newcastle General Advertiser of August 23, stated that death occurred in Toronto, "to which place she had gone on a visit on Sunday 20th instant, after a short illness which she endured with examplary patience and resignation, in the 39th year of her age. She left a numerous family to regret her loss." Her tombstone in the Old Kirk Burying Ground in Cobourg bore the inscription, "Sacred to the Memory of Mercy Wilcox. Wife of Wm. Weller of Cobourg. Who Departed This Life 20th August 1843. Aged 39 y's." There were seven living children, several of whom were still quitge young at the time." from "John Laing Weller, C.E., M.E.I.C; The Man Who Does Things" by Madelein "Peggy" Muntz, pg. 5.2,6,7,8,5 She was buried on 22 August 1843 at Old Kirk Burying Ground, Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Memorial: (See Exhibit) Sacred; To the memory of; Mercy Weller; Who departed this life; 20 Aug. 1843; Aged 39 Years; In life Amiable, in suffering Patient, in death blessed." from a snapshot found in the Madelien Muntz Collection, ALV.IV.4, 2006.73.873, Scarpbook, St. Catharines Museum, Oct. 5, 2016. (Note: The picture in the snapshot is not readable - the inscription is too fuzzy. However, Madelein Muntz provides the inscription in her book re John Laing Weller.)

"1843, Aug 22, W. Weller, hearse" item in Thomas B. Clench's "Coffins and Funderal Charges" at Cobourg Public Library, July 20 2016. (This would be the hearse for his wife, Mercy Wilcox who died August 20th.)
"Cemetery notes and/or description: Also known as the Old Scotch Kirk Cemetery, it was located next to the first permanent building used by St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, which used the building until 1862. While the plaque at the site indicates that 37 individuals were buried at this cemetery, one individual (Alexander Alcorn) is listed twice - therefore the total number of burials is 36. The current area reserved for the cemetery is too small to hold these many graves and it is believed that many of the original graves are located under a parking lot adjacent to the cemetery." per Findagrave for Mercy Weller - Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GRid=35027269&CRid=2283391&.2,6,9,8,5
