"Wedding Bells; St. James' church was the scene of a gay gathering this afternoon, the attraction being the marriage of Miss Madeline Whitehead, of this city, to Mr. J. L. Weller, of Brighton. The Rev. mr. McMorine, incumbent of St. James', performed the nuptial ceremony in the presence of a large number of spectators. Miss Rowlands and Miss Macdougall attended the bride as her maids, and Messrs. H. Clark, Peterboro', a graduate of the R. M. C. and now engineer on the Trent Valley canal, and T. W. Chalmers, of Adoplhustown, also a graduate of the r. M. C., who were both fellow-cadets with the groom, sustained him during the proceedings. The bride, who is well known to Kingstonians, looked remarkably well in her travelling costume of brown cashmere embroidered in silk. She received from her many admiring friends numerous tokens of their regard in the shape of gifts of every description, many of which are magnificent and costly. The groom, mr. J. L. Weller, who passed through the R. M. C. with honor, is also well and popularly known, and needs not mention of his many good qualities. He took part in the late North-West rebellion, acting as A. D. C. to Gen. Laurie throughout the campaign, and is now one of the Murray canal civil engineers. Mr. and Mrs. Weller have left for the States where they will spend their honeymoon before returning to take up residence in Brighton. The wish of their Kingston friends is that the spotless page of life's volume which has just been opened will remain unsullied by any care or misfortune and that long life and prosperity may attend them." newspaper cutout on page of scrap book of Madeleing Muntz, granddaughter of Madelein Marcia (Whitehead) Weller, Madelein Muntz Collection, St. Catharines Museum, Oct. 5, 2016, ALV.IV.4, 2006.73.873, Scrapbook.)

He enrolled in the Royal Military College of Canada in February of 1880 and graduated fourth in his class with the First Class Certificate in Engineering. An athlete in college and the military, he won many awards, including the first Admiralty Trophy presented by the American Canoe Association in 1884 and, in 1920, was runner-up in the Canadian Senior Golf Championship. He served over 40 years in the military, which is where his career as a canal engineer began. He was Assistant Engineer on the Cornwall Canal enlargement project at Stormont, (which is where all his children were born); and thereafter worked on projects related to the Welland Canals at Niagara, Ontario. His triumph was as Engineer-in-Charge of the construction of the fourth Welland Ship Canal, which was so large and successful, it eclipsed the previous three which are now abandoned. An engineering marvel, the Welland Canal bypasses Niagara Falls and cuts through the Peninsula from Port Weller (named in John's honor), to Port Colborne. Still in use today, it carries about 40 million tons of cargo per year between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, lifting ship nearly 600 feet in a series of seven locks between the two lakes. John L. Weller was named a Life Member of the Engineering Institute of Canada. He died at Hamilton, Ontario less than three months before the Welland Ship Canal was opened. He was survived by his wife and children. In 2007 his great-grandaughter, Madelein Peggy Muntz, published a book about him entitled 'John Laing Weller'. Yet so it was; and it proves to demonstration that manufactures, under a protective policy, are as likley to prove beneficial here, as in the neighbouring States - Lowell for example. It is to use a well known fact that this Factory gives empoyment to at least thirty-eight thousands pounds of other labour, two-thirds of which is agricultural, namely - 20,000 sheep, worth 10 shillings, 10,000 pounds. Six thousand acres of land, worth 3 pounds an acre, 18,000 pounds. The wages of operatives, agents, & c. &c., will make up at least another ten thousand pounds; and all this benefit is derived from an original capital of 12,000 pounds. The farmers must not imagine that a market for their wool is all the benefit they derive from this factory, - they must remember that almost all wages of the operatives go to them either directly or indirectly for food." from The Cobourg Star, Sep 14, 1847, copied from microfilm at Cobourg Public Library. on 15 September 1847 at McKechnie's Woolen Factory, Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Ontario.4 He died on 4 May 1852 at Cheltenham, Peel Co., Canada West; "My Duncan was born in 1776 died 1850(Cheltenham, Ontario) married Mary McEachern b 1790 died 1846.

Note: The surname is spelled 'Wilder" in this record but I expect it is actually Richard Weller - info matches per 1840.1 He appeared on the census of 1840 at Hinesburgh, Chrittenden Co., Vermont, U.S.A; 1840 Census: Richard Weller; 1 male under 5; 2 males 5 thru 9; 1 male 50 thru 59; 1 female under 5; 1 female 30 thru 39; Persons under 20 - 4; Persons 20 thru 49 - 1; Total Persons: 6 (ancestry.com.)1 He appeared on the census of 9 October 1850 at Hinesburgh, Chittenden Co., Vermont, U.S.A; Age 56 at 1850 Census: Weller, Richard, 56, b. Is this correct???

Note: This Quit Claim Deed was taken from "Descendants of Asa Weller OGS Quinte Branch Linda Smith UE" a document at Trenton Public Library, OGS Room – December 16, 2015 (Copied the first 5 pages of the larger document)
Note: Interestingly enough, this sizeable book (bound with a duotang) contains what its title says “Descendants of Asa Weller” but the first few pages are not about Asa Weller at all but contain the Quit claim Deed of William Weller of Cobourg, who was a cousin. This document serves to confirm that William Weller’s father was David Weller and then we can see that David Weller and Eliakim Weller, Asa Weller’s father, were brothers.4 He died in January 1863 at Hinesburg, Chittenden Co., Vermont, U.S.A; "Will and Probate Records: ... I, Green D. Weller of Burlington in the County of Chittenden and State of Vermont as principal and ..... has been appointed by the Probate Court ... administrator of the estate of Richard Weller late of Hinesburg...
