Beecher McGillis and his Dad, Henry, owned farms side by side on the Telephone road about one kilometer east of highway 30. This highway goes out of Brighton to Campbellford. Both farms almost went as far as the spring from which Brighton got her water. Mother was born to Beecher and his wife Emma Jane McGillis in 1895 on that farm. My Grandparents, Beecher and Emma Jane are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Brighton. Torrence died in Montana but it was too expensive to have his body brought back for burial but his son, Henry, had his name put on his tombstone in Waite's Cemetery which is about a kilometer west of where Everett Minaker was born at the south end of Waite's road. My Grandma's foster parents were Herbert and Catherine Lorinda Smith. They kept the lighthouse. The Smith's were Aunt and Uncle to Grandpa Beecher. As time went by Grandpa got an eye on Emma Jane Gibson Smith (She dropped the Gibson ame). Since they were no relation, they were married. Their children wee Evelyn, Raymond, Sybil and Rex. When Mother was about 10 or 11 years old, she went to spend a few days at the lighthouse with her Aunt and Uncle, the Smith's. Each night she would go up the 80 steps with Uncle Herb to light the light. I heard her tell that she was very lonely there and homesick. To put in time she carver he name on the lighthouse. Her name is still there but covered by shingles whcih were put in to preserve the lighthouse from wind, water and weather. This is the McGillis story." this is the second part of a note passed to me by Norm Bastin after the History Open House Feb 2013, due to the connection with the lighthouse.
