A quart of whisky and a keg of beer were obtained for a merry-making. The dance proceeded until about daylight, several of the party, including the host, Vansickle and Martin, the former insisting on dancing with the set on the floor, the latter remonstrating and pushing him away. Finally Martin drew back and struck Vansickle a violent blow with his flat across the collar bone. Vansickle fell across his wife's lap and rolled down upon the floor, a dead man." Thomas H. "The Murder of Thomas Vansicklen and what became of Melissa & son Obediah. This story was told to Verna Vansicklen by her father Obediah Vansicklen. Apparently Thomas Vansicklen had quite a temper and was jealous of attentions paid to Melissa. They were at a bar or dance, some social event when Thomas took umbrage at another fellow's attention to Melissa. He and the other fellow got into a fist fight which ended in Thomas' death. It being the "Frontier" the other fellow later married Melissa. Can we assume from this that it was Simon Mark who killed Thomas since he was the one who later married Melissa?
Melissa subsequently died at age 39 and most likely in childbirth. The last child she delivered was Minnie who was born in October of 1879 matching the time of Melissa's death. The last child born to Thomas & Melissa was Obediah, born just days before his father's death."
