"One man is dead following a collision Tuesday night between a farm tractor and a pickup truck just north of Brighton, Ont. Northumberland OPP say the farm tractor was rear-ended by the westbound pickup along County Road 41 near County Road 26. Paramedics and firefighters arrived around 9:30 p.m. and had to extricate a man who was pinned underneath the tractor which ended up in a ditch.
Police say 60-year-old David Down of Brighton was pronounced dead at the scene which was just metres away from his residence. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured. Fred lives on the farm just to the east of David Down, his nephew; Fred is the brother of David's father, Wes Down. Fred wanted me to look at some old papers he had with a view to placing them in a museum or achive, if they were of any value. I took the lot; he was anxious to be free of them. Fred was more interested in his porblem with memorials at McPhail's. There is a family dispute re the original memorial for Richard H. Down and the later memorial which includes Richard, his wife Fidelia Maybee and sons Samuel and William. Not sure I can add to the info re this but will look at cemetery transcriptions. on 25 August 2006 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario.2 He died on 30 August 2008 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario, at age 86; "Down, Robert Frederick "Fred" - Lifelong resident of Brighton Township, graduated of the Ontario College of Art, farmer and former custom farm operator. Suddenly on Saturday, August 30th, 2008, age 86 years. Fred Down, son of the late John Arthur Down and the late Elizabeth (Clement). Predeceased by his brother Wesley Clement Down. Brother-in-law of Betty McGill Down and the late Margaret Down.
