Charles Chase Sr. Witness at marriage of sister Mary. on 3 March 1832 at Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario. He "Charles, the eldest son of Daniel Chase, of Oswego county (N.Y.), was the pioneer of the Chase family into Prince Edward county, Canada West (now Ontario), coming about 1833 or 1834 with his young wife and their first baby, Philip. They had practically nothing on which to start in a new country, but were befriended in the manner of the rude hospitality of those days, when those who had gave and none went hungry. While the couple struggled, working here and there, and seeking a more secure settlement, they became acquainted with one Johnnie Garrett, and a lasting friendship sprang up between the two families. Chase never tired, in later life, of telling of the friendliness of the Garretts to himself and his growing family during the years when they needed the helping had and it is a pleasant duty to relate that in later life that helpfulness was passed to many others along the way." Per Chase Genealogy, part of Harry & Jean Chase Papers in 1833. He "In 1849, having saved enough, by rigid frugality and hard work, for a down payment, he purchased from John Forsyth 100 acres of land, being the front (north) half of lot 105 in the second concession of Ameliasburgh, the registration being dated January 15th of that year. Seven years later, having this partly cleared and under cultivation, and paid for, he secured another 100 acres, being the south half of the same lot, the vendor being the Bank of Montreal. Thus was the Chase family well started in the road to stability, if not wealth as the world would measure it. In time a farm was secured close by for each of his sons as they grew and married, until it became veritably a Chase settlement." Per Chase Genealogy, part of Harry & Jean Chase Papers in 1849. Daniel Chase

M, b. 1787, d. 18 November 1853
Daniel Chase was born in 1787 at Lowell, Massachusetts, U.S.A; Location per Peggy M. Winston Info. Date per 1851 Census. IGI Record. "A son of Daniel Chase and Aletha Gordon of Oswego, New York State, Charles Chase came to Canada from Vermont, U.S.A., about 1822. His wife was Emily Hawes, and together they had a family of five sons and two daughters." from 7th Town/Ameliasburgh. He married Althea Gordon circa 1806 at New York, U.S.A; IGI Record. Daniel Chase "Anecdotal - In two letters from Mrs. Stanley Wallace, Newport (N.Y.), are paragraphs of interest bearing on the lost Chase line. Speaking of the perusal of a history of Oswego county (N.Y.), she finds a reference to the town of Boylston, the first town meeting of which was held in the spring of 1828, and Daniel Chase was elected the first commissioner of highways. There is also mention of the marriage of Betsy Gordon about that time (this name is not to be confused with Althea Gordon, my grandmother, who would have been married some years previous to this date); and in 1841 Jacob V. Gordon was supervisor. Two pertinent paragraphs from these letters are as follows:
I think, from your record, that your grandfather (Chase) must have moved, with all his children, to Canada. Also, I feel rather sure that you may be descended from William. If you have studied the descendants of the three Chases, you have found that William's were the adventurers, the ones who always went where land opened up; and in 1821 Oswego county was still fairly pioneer country.
And again: Interesting things come about. I was reading Boylston's history in the 1860 Gazetter and I think I have found from whom your Uncle Sweetman was named. It says: "The first settlement was made in 1810 by John Wort and Michael Sweetman of Canojarie.' It also says the first marriage was that of Daniel Wells and Elizabeth Gordon. I should imagine Daniel married after he came to town.'" Per Chase Genealogy, part of Harry & Jean Chase Papers in 1828 at Boylston, Oswego Co., New York, U.S.A.. He "The first settler at Gardenville was William Andrew Young, his brother Aaron, and Daniel Chase, who settled in the same year." from The Memoirs of Marshall Young (1851-1943),Gardenville History, pg. 79, 7th Town/Ameliasburgh circa 1830 at Ameliasburg Twp., Gardenville, Prince Edward Co., Ontario.1 He lived in 1851 at Conc 2 Lot 107, Ameliasburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Ontario; Per 1851 Census.
