  • Residence: 1834; Seymour Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "In 1834, Thomas Allan of Berwickshire, Scotland - recently retired from the Royal Navy - took up his 200-acre Crown grant in the wilderness that became Seymour Township. An ambitious man, he added another 900 acres to his holding and began his life as a landed gentleman. Thomas married in his 60s, mindful of the need for heirs for his estate. Unfortunately, his bride Elizabeth Bonner did not share his enthusiasm for Upper Canada, and remained stalwart in Scotland, two sons attesting to Thomas' occasional visits to the old country. Elizabeth forbade the sons to leave for Canada, although in the way of youth everywhere, they did one day break their vow, and went on to became successful surgeons in North America." from the article "The Scottish Hearts of Fogorig" by Lindi Pierce in County & Quinte Living, Winter 2013.
Note: This article does not mention David Allan but it appears by the records that he was in Seymour from around this time and could have been a major player in the early projects of his older brother, Thomas Allan, including the building of the mills and buildings at what was called Fogorig farm, after their farm in Scotland. Need more info re David Allan's early activities, before he was married and began his work north in Seymour Twp. near Rylstone. (Dan Buchanan)
Note: David Allan would have been 18 years old in 1834 when his older brother Thomas came to set up a community in Seymour Township. It could be that young David came with his brother at that time. Certainly, he was in Seymour in 1842 to obtain a patent from the crown for lot 20, concession 4, Seymour Twp. We need to see the census and assessment records for Seymour for the 1830s and 1840s to see who was here when. (Dan Buchanan, May 10 2021)

On this site, during the 1840s, the Allan pioneers built a saw mill and a grist mill on the Crowe River. About the same time, David Allan also built the first bridge to span the Crowe in Seymour to replace the ford which had been previously used. It was a wooden structure that was replaced in 1891 by a 150-foot steel bridge that cost $3496. When it, too, was replaced in 1976, the cost was reported to be $300,000. For a short time, Allan's Store was also the site of the Post Office. Allan descendants operated the mill until it burned in 1952.The area reverted to a rural and tourist area. It was a popular swimming spot for local residents into the 1960s." from page 19 of Gleanings.12

This was an ideal location where upstream the river widened into the present-day Rylstone Lake and downstream the channel narrowed and dropped down a rapids. First, he constructed a wooden bridge to permit traffic to cross the river as his plans for a dam downstream would ruin the ford which was used." from page 41 of Gleanings.12

(Haldimand), Northumberland Co., pg. 86 of 163, ancestry.ca)
Note 1: This page has been mis-filed!! This is clearly Seymour Township people but it is filed under Haldimand. There is no township name on the page, so someone guessed. (Dan Buchanan, May 7 2021)
Note 2: This is interesting! It shows David Allan as "occupier" of 2,000 acres in the area of Menie, west of Hoards. Land records do not show that he owned this property, but that it was in the hands of Thomas Allan, his older brother, who does not appear in any of the census records for Seymour, so was an absentee landlord. It appears as if David was on site to manage the property. (Dan Buchanan, May 7 2021)
  • Census*: 1852; Seymour Twp., Fogorig, Northumberland Co., Canada West; Age 35 at 1851 Census: Allan, David, 35, b. Scotland, Pres., farmer & merchant, married; Susan, 32, b. Cda., Pres., married; Jane J., 6, b. Cda., Pres.; Ellen, 5; Susan, 3; William, 1; Miller, Barbara, 34, b. Cda., Pres., single (1851 Census: Seymour Twp., Northumberland Co., pg. 106 of 130, line 1 - ancestry.ca)
Note: William Forrest is a few lines below and he was located on Conc 1, Lot 16. This means that David Allan was living at the Fogorig farm (Conc 3 Lot 22) up to at least the 1851 Census, which was taken sometime during 1852. (Dan Buchanan, May 11 2021)
Note: Below David Allan's immediate family, we see Barbara Miller, who was probably Susan's sister; she would be with them for some time. Just below this are eight lines containing mostly single younger folks who are shown to be servants or labourers. Some are salders and show makers. This appears to be people working for David Allan at the Fogorig mill and store. In effect, this shows that David Allan was the proprietor of Fogirig and Thomas Allan, his older brother, was the absentee landlord.3

  • Note*: 1867; Seymour Twp., Fogorig, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "The majestic stone gristmill, finished in 1867, with its imported green slate roof has stood for 146 years; the fieldstone walls are still absolutely true. When Allan was a boy, the stone barn was his father's workshop. The unique multi-paned sliding door was rescued from a garage in Campbellford in the 1950s. "Every time I walk here, I find a memory; 65 years on a place..." Allan's voice trails off. He draws attention to a 10-inch nail in the doorframe, driven in to hang a water pail. Note: I have seen no evidence yet that Thomas Allan actually lived in Seymour for any length of time. Would love to see the early census and assessment records which are not online yet. He is in Fogo, Berwickshire, Scotland in both 1851 and 1861 Scotland Census records. His brother, David Allan, was certainly, in Seymour rather early, and appears to be the main on-the-ground operator, even before starting his mills to the north in Rylstone. After Thomas died in 1865, the property in Seymour was passed on to his two sons, William and Robert Thomas, who were then children. Over time, they sold the property - some to the Haig family and some to the Rannie family. (Dan Buchanan, May 3 2021)1,2

  • Residence: circa 1834; Seymour Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "In addition to the Campbell brothers, some retired military men who settled in Seymour Township as military claimants were: ... Thomas Allan ... " page 15 of Gleanings.5
  • Residence: 1834; Con 3 Lot 25 & 26, Seymour Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "HOARD'S STATION; This settlement on Concession 3, Lots 25 and 26 on the road from Campbellford to Stirling was first known as Allandale in recognition of a prominent early pioneer, Thomas Allan, a British naval officer who received 200 acres of land in 1834. He increased his holdings until he owned 1000 acres in the area. In 1836, he brought equipment from Scotland to open a mill which was used for threshing grain, making bone meal, and sawing lumber. The later name of Hoard's Station was to acknowledge the Hoard family, United Empire Loyalists, who settled in Rawdon Township." from page 22 of Gleanings.
Note: It would be great to have documents showing us that Thomas Allan lived in Seymour during those years of the late 1830s and through the 1840s. He owned land at Conc 2 & 3, lots 21 and 22, and his Will passed them to his sons after he died in 1865. David Allan, his younger brother, obtained the Patent from the Crown for Lot 24, Conc 2 in 1856, which is near Hoard's Station, but he let it go to the Commercial Bank in a decade as he concentrated on his mills on the Crowe River. • Residence*: 1834; Seymour Twp., Fogorig, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "In 1834. Thomas Allan of Berwickshire, Scotland - recently retired from the Royal Navy - took up his 200-acre Crown grant in the wilderness that became Seymour Township.
