Note (1): There are two registrations on the same page for Joshua Webster. The first one, #009964, has information missing, including the Informant. The second one, #009966, has more information. The Informant is W. Tourje, a relative of his wife, Pamela Tourje, who he married in June 1877.
Note (2): There is no indication of location on these two pages of Death Registrations. However, I expect it was in Cobourg, for these reasons. First, Joshua Webster had married Pamela Tourje, of Cobourg, in 1877 and a William Tourje was a witness. It is likely that the couple lived with her family in Cobourg. Second, Dr. Powell was well known in Cobourg around this time, and not in Brighton Twp. there are also no other names on the pages from the Brighton area.
    Date Mar 3 1878 per IGI Record.1,11

Note: While there a CemSearch record for Rev. Joshua Webster, I have not seen a stone for him in particular. It says "broken stone" but it may refer to the stone for his wife, Rebecca, where he is mentioned. (Dan Buchanan, Sep 28 2021)7
  • Residence: circa 1806; Stamford, Delaware Co., New York, U.S.A.; "Joshua Webster was born on 6 August 1794 in Hartford, Connecticut and spent his boyhood and youth in Stamford, Delaware County, New York State." from the Introduction to the Joshua Webster Marriage Register, Ontario Archives, published by the Seventh Town Historical Society.9
  • Note: 1812; New York, U.S.A.; "He volunteered in the New York militia during the War of 1812, later claiming payment for his expenditures on military clothing and equipment. He briefly received a pension for military service on the Connecticut line during the war" from the Introduction to the Joshua Webster Marriage Register, Ontario Archives, published by the Seventh Town Historical Society.9
  • Immigration*: 1815; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "In 1815 he came to Upper Canada and taught school where the village of Colborne now stands. In 1816 he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and soon began preaching." from the Introduction to the Joshua Webster Marriage Register, Ontario Archives, published by the Seventh Town Historical Society.9
  • Residence: 1815; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; The 1842 Census says that he had been in the province for 27 years, which means he came in 1815.12
  • Residence: 1816; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Reverend Joshua Webster had entered Canada in 1816 from New York and had settled to the north of Brighton close to Hilton. This man was the father-in-law of Wilmot Wells and the grandfather of Wilmot Gordon a well-known lawyer in Brighton until 1892. Joshua Webster was a military officer and became engaged in farming, teaching, preaching and advocating the interests of the pensioners of the American War. He was a cousin of Daniel Webster a distinguished lawyer and statesman." The Tobey Book, page 68.13
  • Note: 1818; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Joshua Webster who settled at Hilton, Northumberland Co., is connected, albeit distantly, to Daniel Hyde Webster, who lived at Wellington, Prince Edward County. Follow both back far enough and you come to Deacon Jonathan Webster of Hartford, Connecticut. This connection is the result of looking into Morley Webster, an active apple farmer in the Brighton area in the 1900s. He goes back to Hillier Twp. and Daniel Hyde Webster and I was wondering if they were connected to the well-known Methodist Minister at Hilton. Seems they are. (Dan Buchanan, Dec 2017)14

William - preaching to a few settlers at Cold Creek; lonely ride to Percy Mills, small congregation; entertained by Rev. S. Waldron; through the woods to the front, preaching in the house of Joshua Webster; Sunday —Haldimand and Grafton." from "The First Century of Methodism in Canada", Vol. I, Chapter XI, 1824-1825, A Canada Conference Organized, pg. 159 (173 of 920), ancestry.ca.8
  • Note*: 19 October 1829; Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "On October 19, 1829 the society held the first cattle show and the following were awarded prizes: Joshua Webster, Cramahe - $5.00 Brood Mare; Peter Alger, Cramahe - $5.00 Working Oxen. In the evening after this first show there was a banquet provided by Messrs. Ketchum which tendered to the officers and others. To the wives the fair was an occasion for community gossip and the discussion of fashions. To the young swain it was a great occasion to drive to the fair with a spanking team in order to obtain the attention of his desired fiance. There was business for the farmer on each day of the four day affair. The first day was spent discussing the improvement of crops and stocks and this was when the judging took place. On the second day the prizes were distributed. On the third day there was a ploughing match to decide the district championship and on the fourth day horse races took place. All these events were followed by dinners, dancing and songs." from The Tobey Book, page 101 & 102.13
  • Residence: June 1836; Cramahe Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The entire register is in the same handwriting, presumably that of Joshua Webster, and covers the period 1836 to 1874."
Note: The first marriage in Joshua Webster's Marriage Register took place July 21 1836 and both bride and groom were from Murray Township. There are 7 marriages in 1836, all people from the area around Hilton. This suggests that Joshua Webster moved from the area that would become Colborne to Hilton in 1836. (Dan Buchanan, Sep 30 2021)9
  • Residence: 1839; Cramahe Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "They settled at Hilton where Joshua farmed and carried out the duties of a Methodist preacher. He was eventually ordained; records in the United Church Archives in Toronto indicate he was a deacon in 1835, an elder in 1839 and a local preacher starting in 1839." from the Introduction to the Joshua Webster Marriage Register, Ontario Archives, published by the Seventh Town Historical Society.9

  • Note: 27 February 1869; Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "It was not uncommon in the early years of Methodism in Upper Canada for a preacher to be actively preaching, teaching and performing marriages without a church building. Marriages were often performed at a parsonage, and this was probably the case for the marriages recorded by Joshua Webster. The business of the Methodist church was handled at the quarterly meetings of the circuit. The minutes of the fourth quarterly conference held 27 February 1869 at Brighton record that a committee was appointed to dispose of the parsonage house at Hilton and spend the funds on a new parsonage. At the same meeting, Webster was released from the building committee, it was moved and seconded that a church be built at or near Hilton and it was agreed that the Church Committee would be instructed to purchase a site for the church." from the Introduction to the Joshua Webster Marriage Register, Ontario Archives, published by the Seventh Town Historical Society.9
  • Note: 1870; Conc 4 Lot 4, Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "In 1870 a Methodist Episcopal Church was built on concession 4 lot 4 Brighton Township on a 1/4 acre lot purchased from Robert J. In 1965 it was decided that Hilton would be served by Trinity-St. Andrew's United Church in Brighton and three years later, the Hilton church was closed and the congregation dispersed.
