After the war he converted to the Quaker faith and to the British Crown. His father disinherited him for becoming a Quaker, giving him only "5 pounds as his birthright". Daniel travelled to Upper Canada with his wife, Jemima Kilburn, and his sons, James and Samuel. James married Sarah, the daughter of the Abrahan Cronk who had built the stone house at the east end of the Sophiasburgh road.
