He appearss to have had a lot in Drummond Twp., Lanark Co. (town of Perth) but did not occupy and improve the lot, so it was allocated to someone else. (Upper Canada Crown Land Petitions, 1839, Bundle 364A, Volume M21, No. 108, MF C02218, Archives of Canada, Digitized Crown Land Petitions.)8
  • Census: 1817; Perth, Lanark Co., Upper Canada; Canadian Genealogy Index: Name: Simon Mark; Year: 1817; Place: Perth Town, Durmmond Twp.; Province: Ontario; Source: Extracts from the 1817 federal census of Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, National Archives of Canada, Ottawa.; Vol.: pg. 4 (ancestry.ca)
Note: This suggests that Simon Mark was actually in Drummond Twp. in 1817, but he appearently did not stay long. He did not take up the lot allocated to him from the Crown Lands in 1816, due, he said in a later petition, to illness. Soon after, he was in Percy Twp., Northumberland Co. and married Rebecca Bronson. (Dan Buchanan, May 29 2020)4,8
  • Census: before 1824; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1824 Assessment: Simon Mark; no land; (Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada, 1837 Assesssment, line 7 - I printed these from the microfim at the Archives of Ontario.)
Note: This assessment record has no census info included so we can't say if it was before or after the marriage with Rebecca Brunson.
  • Census: 1837; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1837 Assessment: Simon Marke; no land; 1 milks cow; 1 male over 16; 4 males under 16; 1 female over 16; 1 female under 16; Total 7 (Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada, 1837 Assesssment, item 49 - I printed these from the microfim at the Archives of Ontario so in my collection, Simon Marke is at the top of page 3 - the original is all one long list.)
Note: This Assessment record for Simon Marke shows no land but includes census info, as was sometimes done with assessment records.
Note: The counts of 4 males under 16 and 1 female under 16 matches perfectly with the names I have collected for this family. It also assumes that the wife is still here. Other records say Rebecca died in 1836, but there appears to have been a wife here for this record in 1837. Maybe soon afterward??

  • Note*: 27 March 1849; Montreal, Quebec; "To His Excellency the Earl of Elgin and Commanding Governor General of British North America .. The Petition of Simon Mark of the township of Percy in the herewith District, yeoman, Humbly sheweth… That your Memorialist served as a private in the Regiment of Canadian Fencibles during the last war with the United States of America and became entitled to one hundred acres of land for his services,
that soon after the close of the war he was located to one hundred acres of land near the Town of Perth in the Bathurst District, being the south west half of lot number six in the first concession of the Lanark R. Drummond, that he remained therein several months and made a small clearance thereon when he returned to Montreal to visit his relatives; that afterwards returning to the said land he found that in consequence of his absence it had been relocated to another, that on or about the 27th day of February 1839 he presented a petition that he might claim his land but that the same was ?? to him, that since that period all persons entitled to lands for their service during the ?late? belonging to the militia of Lower Canada have had their claims satisfied. That our Memorialist hath reason to believe that when ? petitioning for his land in the year 1839 the cause why he did not obtain the same was that having served in a Lower Canada Corps he was only entitled to his bounty from Lower Canadian lands as was held according to the rules of those days, notwithstanding he had been already located to land in Upper Canada at an early period. Your Memorialist therefore prays that your Excellency will be pleased to order such of the value of one hundred acres to be assured to him and as am duty bound. Montreal, March 27, 1849, Your Petitioner will always pray, Simon Mark, By his atty ?A. H. Meyer??" Crown Land Petitions, Archives of Canada, C-2230, Percy, 1849, Bundle M5, Vol. 371, No. 34 (pg. 647 of 1214 - 5 pages) https://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/006003-110.02-e.php?&q2=29&interval=50&sk=0&&PHPSESSID=npfo6qij0n1rpue06msk2mqnj1
Note: This documet is dated and signed in Montreal, but it was likely produced by Simon's lawyer, who's name I can't make out. At this time he was living in Cattaraugus Co., NY. Maybe he travelled there to attend to this job. Cattaraugus Co. is not far south of Buffalo, NY.8
  • Note: 17 April 1849; Crown Land Departement, Montreal, Canada East; "The Petitioner prays that ?scrip? may ?fare? to him in satisfaction of his claim as a Discharged Soldier from the Canadian Fencible, and states that he was located for the south west half of lot number six in the 1st Concession of the township of Drummond and settled therein. That it was located to another person and that he had not obtained other land in lieu thereof. The name of Simon Mark, a Discharged Soldier from the Canadian Fencibles was returned by the Military ?? Department as listed in September 1816 for the above mentioned lot, which was subsequently relocated to ?Lieut. Alexander Fraser of the New Brunswick Fencibles … and was ?diated? for Patent in his name 14th June 1820. No other land appears to have been assigned to Simon Mark in lieu thereof although on the 27th Feby 1839 a Petition in his name was reported upon. Considering the circumstance of this case, and further his claim for Provincial ?? and was entered and acknowledge in the year 1816 and also reviews in the year 1839 his case appears ?ally entitled to consideration with the discharged soldiers whose names were registered by the late Commissioner of Lands for Lower Canada and with the Militiamen of the same return of the Province whose claims have since the year 1841 continued to be acted upon.
Crown Land Department, Montreal, 5 April 1849" and then, on April 13 1849 "The Committee recommend that Petitioner receive scrip to the amount of one hundred acres." (Archvies of Canada, Crown Land Petitions, C-2230, Percy, 1849, Bundle M5, Vol. 371, No. 34C https://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/006003-110.02-e.php?&q2=29&interval=50&sk=0&&PHPSESSID=npfo6qij0n1rpue06msk2mqnj1)
Note: So, finally, Simon Mark got some money out of the Crown Land Department, in the form of scrip in the value of one hundred acres of land. By this time, he was in the US with a growing family, and could probably use the money more than the land.8

  • Death*: circa 1838; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; The 1837 Assessment record of Percy Twp. has census info for Simon Marke. It shows 7 total people, one male and one female over 16, 4 males under 16 and 1 female under 16. This matches perfectly with the names I have collection for Simon's early family with Rebecca Brunson. However, it also assumes that Rebeccs is still there, shown as a femaile over 16. It appears as if she died in Percy Twp. soon after the birth of daughter Margaret in 1836 and the 1837 Census. This is speculation based on real documents that don't tell us as much as we would like. This is the BEST information we have for this family. (Dan Buchanan, May 29 2020)

Note: Margaret Mark may be a daughter of Simon Mark and Rebecca Brunson. Maybe Rebecca died in childbirth? There is no Mark family in the area at the time other than Simon. The marriage records does not have parents named but the witnesses are James and Hannah Mark, so likely close family. Some speculation here, but based on numerous things we know or can assume. Would love to see more specifics re this.2

Their experience with the name in that area was almost totally Brunson. It should not be a surprise to see this spelling in Joseph's death certificate and other places. (Dan Buchanan, May 29 2020.)
