This factory was at Newcastle, seventeen miles west of Cobourg on the Kingston Road, and it was going cheap. Daniel wanted to buy it but he didn't have the cash. He had the farm, and Hart had the cash from his logging business. If hart would buy the farm for case, Daniel could buy his longed-for machine shop. ... After is was settled, grandfather owned the Grafton farm, Eliza Ann Massey was its mistress, and great-grandfather Daniel owned a factory in Newcastle which would shortly become the property of "The Massey Manufacturing Company," making farm implements with two employees." from pg. 42 of "When I Was Young" by Raymond Massey.

Golden Wedding ... "A very happy event took place on Wednesday of this week at "Sunnyside", the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Massey, about three miles north of Grafton. The event was the fiftieth anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Massey's marriage. About 75 friends and relatives assembled to celebrate the event. Twice that number were invited, but owing to the unfavorable condition of the roads, were unable to be present. A very ejoyable time was spent and everybody united in wishing the aged couple much joy on this happy occassion. After partaking of a very rich and sumptious repast, the preparing of which reflects much credit upon the ladies, addresses suitable to the occassion were delivered by Hart A. Massey, Esq., President of the Massey Manufacturing Compnay of Toronto; Rev. Mr. Balfourof Grafton; W. J. Massey, Esq., of Belleville; and O. W. Powell, Esq., of Cobourg." There followed a list of presents with donors names. - Note: 1891; King St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "Father's office was in "the works", on King Street West near the Exhibition grounds - the Toronto factory and offices of the farm implement business found by my great-grandfather, Daniel Massey in 1847. By 1901, it had become a world-wide operation called Massey-Harris Company. It was still a family business , but only just, since family firms tend to run out of family. On the sudden death of my beloved Uncle Walter, who had been President of Massey-Harris for five years, my father was the sole surviving son of Hart A. Massey, who had built the company to its present stature. Three Massey's, Hart, my grandfather, and two of my uncles,Charles and Walter, had been presidents." from pg. 9 of "When I Was Young" by Raymond Massey.
- Note*: 1891; Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "Hart inherited his father's farm implement manufacturing business and transformed it dramatically by means of mergers, spirited sales and advertising techniques. In 1870 he incorporated it into the "Massey Manufacturing Company", which relocated to Toronto, which he expanded significantly by purchasing the "Toronto Reaper and Mower Co", an American branch plant. In 1891 he merged with "A. Harris, Son and Co" and other Canadian rivals to form MASSEY-HARRIS CO. LTD., of which he was president 1891-6. His son Walter Edward Massey was president of the business from 1896-1901. In 1953 the company merged with the Ferguson companies to form MASSEY-HARRIS-FERGUSON LIMITED, modified to MASSEY-FERGUSON LIMITED in 1958.
He inherited his father's sincere Methodist faith, along with his congenial, yet stern manner, and considered the business as a trust from God. On June 14, 1894 MASSEY MUSIC HALL (now known as MASSEY HALL) was opened, along with "Fred Victor Mission"; gifts to the city of Toronto from Hart Massey in memory of his sons Charles Albert (1848-1884) and Frederick Victor (1864-1890).

- Note: circa 1900; 915 King Street West, Toronto, York Co., Ontario; The old Massey Harris Building at 915 King Street West was incorporated into a new condo development during the period of heavy growth and concstructions in this area of King Street north of the Exhibition grounds, around 2004 and 2005. The building is on the south side of King Street midway between Shaw Street to the west and Strachan Ave. somewhat closer to the east. The main structure of the building was preserved and condo structure was built inside it, reaching a floor above the old building. In the process the outside of the old building was reconditioned and made to look very good. The old main entrance on the east side was maintained as the entrance to the condo although using modern glass doors and windows. An plaque listing WWI casualties who were members of the Massey Harris Company was found covered over during the renovations and it now looks over the east walkway beside the building just south of the main entrance. Grandpa could be spared from his farm work in Grafton only in the winter, so over the frozen St. Lawrence River he would go. He made two drives in a bob-seligh from Grafton to Gloversville. It was three hundred miles each way. He may have lacked time for subtle persuasion but in those two six-hundred-mile trips he got his girl. Grandma married Hart Almerrin Massey in 1846 and she to her honeymoon ride to Grafton wrapped in a couple of big muskox robes behind the best light draft team in the Grafton stable." from pg. 41 of "When I Was Young" by Raymond Massey.

- Note: 1903; London, England; "In London we stayed at the Cecil Hotel in the Strand. To me it seemed like a fairy palace. The night after our arrival a first cousin of father's Frederick Isaiah Massey, cam to dinner. We called my "Fred Eye" and he was the European manager of the Massey-Harris Company. A big, handsome man who spoke very quietly, he had the most courtly manners. He was very nice to me. I had been allowed to stay up for dinner, and he told me storied of the American Civil War. As a Captain in the Union Army, Fred Eye had been wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg." from pg. 31, "When I Was Young" by Raymond Massey.
Note: I wonder if " .. a first cousin of father's .. " is correct? I have Frederick Isaiah Massey and his father as part of a different branch of the US Massey's, far too distant to be this close a relation. He is the right age to be in the Civil War and it is interesting that a Massey so far removed in terms of blood relations would be so high in the Company. More research needed here. - Note: 3 November 1903; London, England; " ... The surgeon, Mr. Dean, in frock coat and tophat, arrived at the house and performed an appendectomy. .... Mother died twenty-four hours later." from pg. 34, "When I Was Young" by Raymond Massey.
- Note: December 1903; 519 Jarvis St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "Cousin Kat, mother's cousin, and her daughter Nan came to live with us when we returned in 1903. Nan was to keep house and Cousin Kate was to occupy the two big rooms that had been mother's sitting room and dressing room." ... and ... "Cousin Kate was then an old lady. Born Katharine Byard of Mobile, Alabama, she had seen the American Civil War, in which her fiance was killed fighting under command of Stonewall Jackson. She suffered the horrors of Reconstruction and the carpetbaggers and was now the widow of James Warnock, a Scottish Canadian who had had a tool-manufacturing business in Galt, Ontario. Galt was a long way from Mobile. In the thirty years she had lived in Canada, I don't think Cousin Kate had ever been warm in winter but she said our house was hotter than her own in Galt." from pg. 35, "When I Was Young" by Raymond Massey.
