Brown, Joan Waddling; Raymond's father, Samuel Brown, born in 1859 of Scottish descent, came to the Stockdale are from Alliston, Ontario. He married Julia Maybee in 1887, and they had six children, four boys and two girls. In the late 1890s the family moved to a farm on Telephone Road, north of Brighton. The children attended local schools and the family attended Edville Church. The family home is still standing, and across the road is the home and farm of their son Royden. This farm was operated, until 1980, by their son Allan. Raymond worked on the farm with his father. He was of serious temperament, attestd to by his two Bibles, both well-worn and marked. In 1916, he joined the Northumberland Company and was on his way to England and then France. This young man soon rose to the rank of Corporal. The war had not been going well for the Allies and had been at a stalemate for some time when the Canadians were assigned the duty of taking Vimy Ridge. The battle was won in short order, but at a terrific cost - 3,598 killed and 70,000 wounded. Raymond J. Brown (Regimental No. 814051) was one of the casualties. On April 9, he was wounded and taken to a hospital in Southport, England. He succumbed to his injuries on May 18, 1917." from page 204 of Florence Chatten's book, Brighton Township, 2009.
