• Death*: 23 July 1886; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Margaret Singleton Obituary (unknown newspaper); “Mrs. Margaret Singleton; Relict of the late John Singleton, departed this life on Friday, the 23rd of July, 1886, in the village of Brighton, Ont., aged 92 years. A brief sketch of her life may be of interest to the public as well as to her many personal friends. It will, therefore, be necessary to speak first of her birth and childhood. She was born in Poughkeepsie, on the Hudson River, May the 4th, 1794. She had three brothers, all older, and six sisters all younger than herself. They were the children of James and Elizabeth (McBride) Canniff. The names of these ten children were Jonas, John, Abraham, Margaret, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Olive, Chloe, and Elizabeth. When Margaret was but a few weeks old her father, being a U.E. Loyalist, removed from Poughkeepsie to Canada, and settled in Adolphustown on the Bay of Quinte. Here she spent the early years of her life and here she received as good an education as the time and locality offered.
  On the 3rd of Feby, 1811, she was married by the Rev. R-Lt. McDowall, of Fredericksburgh, to Mr. John Singleton, only son of Capt. George Singleton, of Singleton’s River, as Belleville was then called.
  It may be interesting to some to know that Capt. George Singleton was the son of the Rev. John Singleton, of Armagh, Ireland, (a memorial tablet of whom is said to be in the English Cathedral of that city.)
  Capt. Singleton came to this country in early life and was in the merchantile business in Montreal but enlisted in the army and served in the war of 1776 under Sir John Johnson, was wounded in the siege of Fort Schuyler and taken prisoner.
  At the close of the war he came to Canada and on account of military services drew over 5000 acres of land, a part of which forms the present city of Belleville. He married Miss Ann MacArthur and the only child of this marriage became the husband of Margaret Caniff. Capt. Singleton died at his farm in Fredericksburgh in September, 1789, while on a journey, accompanied by his wife and child, from their home at Singleton’s River to Kingston.
  In April 1815, John Singleton and his wife removed from Singleton’s River where they had resided from the time of their marriage, and came to live in what was then an almost unbroken forest, but is now the site of the village of Brighton. Here they began to clear for themselves a place for a home and on that very spot they commenced their pioneer life where their home has stood for 73 years.
  On the evening of one of their first days while the husband was burning brush two men were observed going eastward in the path through the woods. The travelers said nothing to the new comers but passed on and were soon out of sight. That evening about 1 ½ miles east in a thickly wooded ravine the mail carrier was seized by two men, tied to a tree, his horse shot; and the mails robbed of much valuable matter including some important military dispatches. It was at that time considered that the travelers noticed were the notorious Bill Johnson and a companion, and that they affected their escape by a boat moored in Presque Isle Bay in charge of a daughter of Johnston. A schooner nearly completed was burned in the harbour about the same time. Such were some of the things that served to break the monotony of the life of the early pioneers.
  In their homes in Belleville and Brighton were born to John and Margaret Singleton five children all still living. These were all baptized by that venerable pioneer Presbyterian Minister, the Rev. Robert McDowall who often remained with them when passing through on his missionary journey. In their early days many were the ministers who found a welcome to their home—ministers of all Evangelical churches.
  But death at length invaded their home. On the 14th April, 1837, a time of great excitement and commotion in the country, the head of the family was taken sick, and after an illness of eight days succumbed to the disease and breathed his last. The blow was very severe but God was dealing mercifully, alth[o]ugh the affliction was great. About this time the Rev. Charles Jones, a minister of the American Presbyterian Church came to Brighton, and under his preaching God was pleased, with others, to bring Margaret Singleton to see the light of his face; and she then became and continued to be a consistent member of the Presbyterian church. In testimony of her attachment to that church, she and her family gave the site for a church to be used only as such, and on it a church was erected which has been used until lately by the Presbyterians of Brighton: but was sold for the purpose of making a payment on the church purchased by them from the Methodist Episcopal church. Mrs. Singleton bore a consistent Christian character during her long life. She delighted in reading the Scriptures and in prayer her disposition was remarkably happy. It is believed that she never allowed any poor person to leave her door unfed. Her last days were peaceful and contented. She often said to those who called upon her “Do you not think I am well cared for?” The occasional visits of her eldest brother, Mr. Jonas Caniff, of Belleville, the father of Dr. Wm. Caniff, of Toronto, were much enjoyed. She survived her brother by three years.
  When she was deprived through infirmity of attending the sanctuary, she almost daily read sermons written by Dr. Guthrie, Spurgeon, Moody, and other ministers. The Scriptures were her delight. The 23rd Psalm was a great favorite and verses of poetry were often repeated, of which she was very fond; one of which was: “Oh! to grave how great a debtor, Daily I’m constrained to be, Let they goodness like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to thee.”
  During the last few weeks of her life she suffered at times severe pain and on the morning of the 23rd of July, 1886, she fell asleep in Jesus. The funeral was attended by a number of sympathizing friends. The Rev. Mr. Sutherland, of Warkworth, was at the request of the friends invited to attend the funeral. He preached an excellent sermon. The Rev. Dr. Hodgkins, of Colborne, also related some very interesting and touching reminiscences of the earlier years of her Christian life. The Rev. Mr. McLeod, of Brighton, took part in the services. The Rev. Mr. Duncan, Colborne, her pastor, was also present and being a near relative was one of the pall bearers. The other pall bearers were her own nearest relatives they being her only sons George and A.C. Singleton, Geo. S. Marsh, half-brother of her husband, Harry Meade, her grandson, and William Duncan, her great-grandson. This was somewhat remarkable, as they are the representatives of five generations. Her remains were carried to their last resting place in Mount Hope Cemetery and there deposited in hope of a “blessed and glorious resurrection.”
  The following is an extract from a communication of Dr. Caniff, Toronto, with reference to the above obituary notice.— “I should much like to see a memoir of your mother published. Lives like hers should not be forgotten.
