The first inklings of G. J.’s collecting tendencies come in the form of an 1871 listing of new subscribers in Mason’s Monthly Coin and Stamp Collectors’ Magazine. Despite being a busy shopkeeper, he and his younger brother secured government appointments. He found the time to make the quarter mile (0.4 km) trip between the village and the railway station 12

Apparently, in the summer, many came “from far and near” to see Chadd’s collection (a small fee was charged) and then go fishing from the dock. It certainly creates a bucolic image of edification and recreation on a beautiful summer day, with the reward of a great catch and fresh fish supper. A visit to the Chadd Museum would have pleased those interested in more lurid—and now, of course, inappropriate— displays, such as “Indian” skulls, collected from Bald Head (one with an arrowhead still embedded
within it). G. J.’s collection included far more than the secrets of the local sand and soil. Stuffed birds and animals and a “fascinating” ostrich egg were fondly remembered (7th Town Historical Society 1984:513–514)." from "The Life, Collections and Museums of G.J. J.’s name appears in the 1884 Report of the Demonstration in Honour of the Fortieth Anniversary of Sir John A. Macdonald’s Entrance into Public
Life as a delegate from Prince Edward County appointed to attend the Toronto Convention, revealing his Conservative colours and family political pedigree. Given that party patronage was the political norm of the times, it is not a surprise that on October 1, 1885, G. J. was appointed as a
Sub-Collector at Wellers Bay for the Department of Customs, Outside Service, at an annual salary of $400 (Canada1887). Two years later to the day, he was promoted from clerk to Purchasing Agent for the COR, a position of enough note
to rate both a listing and some brief biographical
information in railroad directories of the day. G. J. must have been particularly proud of his federal appointment, since in the 1891 census, he listed his occupation as Customs Officer, rather than listing his full-time position with the railway
(Library and Archives Canada 1891)." from "The Life, Collections and Museums of G.J. The COR’s spectacular loss was a big gain for local agriculture, as “The Company” became an area where farmers pastured their cattle for the season (7th Town Historical Society 1984:87).

He "More than a century and a half ago, a young man in Prince Edward County began collecting coins, fossils, minerals and 'Indian relics'. George James (G.J.) Chadd would continue to do so for more than fifty years amassing a collection that reflected his journey through life from childhood in Picton, to Wellington as a young husband and father, to Wellers Bay in the 1880s and 1890s, culminating in Trenton during the early years of the 20th century." exerpt from a letter written by David Harris Aug 29 2020, digital copy passed to me by Sean Scally, July 22 2022.
Note: George J. Chadd lived in Ameliasburgh Township, just south of the border with Murray Township, in an area that was generally called "The Carrying Place". However, at that time, the formal name for the post office there was "Murray" - and that would not change until the early 1920s when the people lobbied for the name Carrying Place. It appears that he worked as a customs agent at the Gardenville station for the Central Ontario Railway.

Sub-Collector at Wellers Bay for the Department of Customs, Outside Service, at an annual salary of $400 (Canada1887). Two years later to the day, he was promoted from clerk to Purchasing Agent for the COR, a position of enough note
