He "Ameliasburgh Township’s first museum was established sometime around 1884 by Chadd, who filled two rooms in the “nice” boarding house that the COR had built contiguous to the iron ore dock. Apparently, in the summer, many came “from far and near” to see Chadd’s collection (a small fee was charged) and then go fishing from the dock. It certainly creates a bucolic image of edification and recreation on a beautiful summer day, with the reward of a great catch and fresh fish supper. A visit to the Chadd Museum would have pleased those interested in more lurid—and now, of course, inappropriate— displays, such as “Indian” skulls, collected from Bald Head (one with an arrowhead still embedded
within it). G. J.’s collection included far more than the secrets of the local sand and soil. Note: George J. Chadd lived in Ameliasburgh Township, just south of the border with Murray Township, in an area that was generally called "The Carrying Place". However, at that time, the formal name for the post office there was "Murray" - and that would not change until the early 1920s when the people lobbied for the name Carrying Place. It appears that he worked as a customs agent at the Gardenville station for the Central Ontario Railway. While this may reflect the sinecure of patronage plums of the day, it also clearly demonstrates the rapid demise of Wellers Bay as a port of any importance.
