He "Even when McCuaig left public life the subject continued to cause unrest in Prince Edward County. J.M. Platt, McCuaig's Liberal successor, resurrected the issue several times in 1883 and 1885, even though the work was well underway by this time. He claimed that local vessel owners found Weller's Bay a better harbour, and that the government's decision had been dictated by politics. One of his charges maintained that a pair of prominent local Liberals, the McMullen brothers, had purchased land around Weller's Bay in anticipation of the selection of that route, hoping to turn a profit by selling the land back to the government. Consequently, he argued the Conservative government deliberately selected the other route to avoid paying these men for their land." Would W.H. Ponton, Thos. Kelso, Henry Corby and M. Bowell, the other Directors, all of whom live in Town, and have a deep interest in it, be at all likely to sacrifice their private interests, as well as their public reputations, in order to assist in providing traffic for the Grand Trunk Railway, at the expense of the Town? To suppose that any of these gentlemen would for a moment listen to a proposition, which, if carried out, would injure the Town in which their lives have been spent, and in which the largest proportion of what they have, is situated, is not only absurd, but a direct and malicious reflection upon their characters as men, both in their private and public actions, by men whose ravings time will prove to be but the product of disorganized minds, rendered vicious by feelings of disappointment and revenge."

He "He served as mayor of Belleville in 1867 and 1868." per FindaGrave. in 1868 at Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario.3 He "In October, 1869, fifty-four Belleville ratepayers requested town council to consider the "advisability and necessity" of Belleville being represented at a railway meeting scheduled to be held at Madoc on the 20th of that month. Belleville Mayor P.D. Conger immediately called a public meeting of ratepayers to discuss the matter. .... Among the gentlemen who had been invited to sit on the platform was Henry Corby, MPP, founder of Corby Distillery at Hayden's Corners just north of Belleville (renamed Corbyville in 1882). Although Corby was in favour of the railway, he did not see what kind of action the meeting could take. The time had elapsed for giving notice to the Legislature for a charter during the current session, so what was the use in hurrying? As for Kingston, Corby did not believe that there was any likelihood of it ever being considered as the terminus." The Grand Junction Railway, Nick and Helma Mika, 1985, Mika Publishing, page 50 & 51. in October 1869 at Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario.7 He "In 1844 Henry Corby gained possession of the portion of the lot upon which this building now stands. Mr. Corby's own offices were originally on the north side of Bridge Street just east of Front Street. When he built on the Front Street property in the early 1850's he leased it to Philip Hambly as a bakery and saloon. Some of the wide stone walls of this building remain inside the present building at the lowest level. The building we see now was built as Henry Corby's new office between 1868 and 1872. The second storey was greatly altered from the original brick facade after Henry's son, Henry Corby (commonly known as Harry) took over the business in 1881. The lower storey of dressed stone is in the English Italianate style of classical round arched windows and doorways separated by rusticated stone piers. The central carriageway is now enclosed. The tradition of public service and business acumen begun by Henry Corby as an early councillor, reeve, mayor and member of the first Legislature of Ontario in 1867, the importance of the distilling and milling industry he founded, were carried on and greatly extended by his son Harry, later Senator Corby." from "Belleville's Heritage: A Partial Inventory of old Buildings", Published by The Hastings County Historical Society, 1978, page 16. circa 1870 at Front St., Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario. Henry Corby, whose distillery was located in Thurlow Township, took issue with Dean's statement that Thurlow would not be prepared to give aid in the way of a bonus. He proposed that the construction of the road be encouraged and assisted by municipal aid and that a liberal bonus be granted by the town to further the important enterprise." The Grand Junction Railway, Nick and Helma Mika, 1985, Mika Publishing, page 73 & 75. on 26 August 1870 at Grand Junction Railway, Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario.7 He "The annual general meeting of the Grand Junction Railway Company, postponed from June 1st, was held in the company's board rooms at Belleville on October 1, 1872. ... The main business on the meeting's agenda was the election of directors for the ensuing year, six to be named by the warden of Hastings and six to be elected by the company's shareholders. The warden, on behalf of the County of Hastings, appointed the Hon. Billa Flint; Hon. Robert Read; Mackenzie Bowell, MP; James Brown, MP; Geo. Boulter, MD, MPP; and Henry Corby, MPP. " The Grand Junction Railway, Nick and Helma Mika, 1985, Mika Publishing, page 85. on 1 October 1872 at Grand Junction Railway, Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario.7 He "By November 1872, the gloves had come off in the dispute over the Grand Junction as more and stronger charges and counter-charges were being made in the local press. ... "Who are the gentlemen accused of a desire of ruining the Town, for the purpose of building a feeder exclusively for the Grand Trunk Railway?" asked the Daily Intelligencer in its November 19th issue. ... Would W.H.

For a number of years large barrels of whiskey were brought into Belleville by horse-drawn cart from Corbyville for bottling. A bottling operation was eventually established in Corbyville. Crates of the bottled whiskey were then transported to the Belleville warehouse, from which they were loaded onto rail cars and shipped throughout Canada. As the rail system expanded across the country during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Corby name spread throughout the country and became known as a high-quality whiskey. Arriving at the canal three boats loaded with people; (with the Trenton Band playing on one of the boats) steamed through the canal as far as Brighton Wharf where a stop was made and where lay at the wharf the yacht Surprise, Commodore Forbes in command, which was the first boat to pass through the canal. Later the excursionists proceeded to Presqu'ile, which in the near future will become famous as a summer resort. At present there are many campers there. It was with regret that the party sailed for home. We noticed the following prominent persons present from a distance and from Trenton: Hon. The house he built for himself was used as a surgery as well as an inn. His sympathy with William Lyon Mackenzie during the ill-fated 1837 Rebellion landed him in Kingston jail and later forced him to flee the country, but Thurlow Township inhabitants retained the name of Hayden's Corners for the small settlement that developed around the doctor's inn, until the early 1880s when it was renamed Corbyville." In 1884, the old John Frederick farm, then owned by Wm. Bradshaw, was bought by Harry Corby. During the years many older residents—and some not- so-old — will remember the hop-picking which was an experiment. The train left the police station in Belleville every morning and came out to the hop fields with its “load of pickers”. in 1882 at Thurlow Twp., Corbyville, Hastings Co., Ontario.6 He "H. Corby built a suite of offices on Main Street in Belleville and a new warehouse. He also was quick to institute the practice of bottling whiskey rather than sell it in barrels. Corby also began importing Scotch whiskey, and for a while the company became involved in the tobacco trade." from "Corby Distilleries Limited History", International Directory of Company Histories, Vol. 14. He "A BIT OF FIRST-HAND INFORMATION WITH LOCAL GEOGRAPHY. The Belleville Ontario-Intelligencer runs an interesting column called "Looking Backward", which is of course, just what it says, i.e. items from their files of bygone years. On August sixteenth they reproduced a splendid bit of interesting and important news, exactly as they first sent it out in 1889, fifty years ago. … 50 Years Ago (August 16, 1889) … Through the courtesy of Mr. H. Corby, M. P., many citizens, including Mayor W. Jeffers Diamond and the members of the city council, Mr. Thomas Ritchie, President of the Board of Trade, Col. Strong, American consul here, and many other prominent citizens, joined a number of the prominent citizens of Trenton yesterday in formally opening the Murray Canal. Mackenzie Bowell, Minister of Customs; Mr. Cochrane, M.P; Mr. H. Corby, M.P; Mr. G. W. Ostrom, M.P.P; Mr. D: Gilmour and Mayor Morrison of Trenton.
