Henry Maitland is above and Jessy S. Smith below.⁴ He "In the early 1880’s there were several log houses standing. Adjoining the Government property on which the Simpson family lived, was land purchased and deeded by the Government to Captain Malcolm Shaw, who built the brick house on the site of the Government House. That was Captain Shaw’s winter home, as he was a Lake boat captain during the sailing season." from page 12 of "Presqu'ile".
Note: Recent research into the land records show that Malcolm Shaw purchased Water Lot 4 from Elizabeth Striker in 1882, she being the widow of James C. Striker, a sailor on Presqu'ile. Malcolm Shaw had married Sarah Jane Maintland in 1869, she being the daughter of Henry Maitland and long-time ship captain at Presqu'ile. It is suggested in the 1869 survey of Presqu'ile that Henry Maitland owned upwards of 30 acres on Presqu'ile at that time, including Water Lot 4. However, land records do not mention his name.
Water Lot 4 was sold in 1875 by Sarah Ann (Gibson) Unger to James C. Striker. She was a duaghter of Joseph Gibson married to Chester Unger. The Unger family moved to Faraday Twp., Hastings Co. James C. Striker died and his children granted the lot to their mother, Elizabeth and she sold it to Malcolm Striker in 1882.
This sets up the likely construction of the brick house at 80 Bayshore Road by Malcolm Shaw in 1883, soon after acquiring this land. The quote above appears to indicate that this house was built on the site of the original court house and jail built in 1802. We know that this building was taken over by the Gibson family and Joseph Gibson would the owner until selling to his daughter in 1866.
Malcolm and Sarah Shaw are living there per the 1901 Census but Malcolm retired and they soon moved to Kingston. They are both buried in the Cataraqui Cemetery. There is also confusion because Dean is shown in Lot E, to the west of lot 4a. Not sure why this record does not say Lot E, but we must assume that is what it covers. Lot 4a was dealt with much differently.
