Date Sep 7 1778 & location Anne Arundel, Annapolis, Maryland, USA per family tree of Gordon_BB on ancestry.com, Dec 19 2016.1,2 He lived in 1800 at York, York Co., Upper Canada; "He married for the second time and settled in Upper Canada, first at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake), where he entered government services, and then, in 1797, at York (Toronto). Samuel remained in Maryland where he was probably raised and educated under the care of his uncle, John Donavan, postmaster of Hancock. Thomas, once settled himself, encouraged his eldest son to join him with the lure of a position in his own office of registrar of York County. By 1800, Samuel, age 21, had arrived in the provincial capital of Upper Canada and was soon employed as deputy to David Burns, clerk of the crown and pleas, the administrative support for the Court of King's Bench." from Dictionary of Canadian Biography, Samuel Smith Ridout - http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/ridout_samuel_smith_8E.html.1 He married Eliza Parsons on 21 May 1805 at York, York Co., Upper Canada; "RIDOUT, SAMUEL SMITH, office holder, merchant, and militia officer; b. 7 Sept. 1778 in Annapolis, Md, eldest son of Thomas Ridout* and his first wife, Isabella —; m. first 21 May 1805 Eliza Parsons (d. 1838), and they had four sons and five daughters; m. secondly 2 Oct. 1838 Mary Hardwick Unwin, widow of Francis Humphreys; d. 6 June 1855 in Toronto." from Dictinary of Canadian Biography, Samuel Smith Ridout, http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/ridout_samuel_smith_8E.html.1 Samuel Smith Ridout "In 1827 Ridout participated in one of the most blatant examples of office trading by the “family compact.” Samuel resigned as sheriff to take the less-demanding post of registrar of York County from the retiring incumbent, Stephen Jarvis. The latter’s son, William Botsford Jarvis*, replaced Ridout as sheriff and, by leaving his position in the office of the provincial secretary and registrar, opened a place there for Samuel Peters Jarvis, whose late father, William Jarvis*, had held the post of provincial secretary and registrar. The complex exchange of offices, overseen and acquiesced in by Lieutenant Governor Sir Peregrine Maitland, was a happy change of situations for all involved, but to the compact’s opponents it seemed yet another example of the oligarchy’s arrogance and power. Ridout held the post of county registrar until his death on 6 June 1855. He was succeeded by his son John, who had been deputy registrar since 1827. A younger son, George Samuel, also became deputy registrar and later city assessor for Toronto. A daughter, Caroline Amelia, married his stepson, Toronto singer and music teacher James Dodsley Humphreys*. from Dictionary of Canadian Biogrphy, Samuel Smith Ridout, http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/ridout_samuel_smith_8E.html in 1827 at York, York Co., Upper Canada.1 He married Mary Hardwick Unwin on 9 October 1838 at Toronto, York Co., Upper Canada; "Ridout to Humphreys. "In 1817 Jarvis killed John Ridout in a duel. John was the son of Upper Canada's Surveyor General, Thomas Ridout. The Jarvis and Ridout families carried a longstanding enmity; in 1817 John Ridout had been ejected from Jarvis' office, and a few days later a chance encounter led to a fistfight between the pair. They agreed to a duel, meeting on July 12 at daybreak. The pair stood back to back, then took 8 steps, turned to face each other, after which Jarvis' second counted to three. The count of three was the signal permitting them to shoot. Ridout shot on the count of two but missed. Jarvis was livid at this violation of the agreement. Their seconds conferred, giving Ridout a second gun, then taking it away and allowing Jarvis to take his shot. He did, killing Ridout.[2] Jarvis was charged with murder, but the charge was reduced to manslaughter before trial. Jarvis was acquitted, as all the formalities of a duel had been met, and the unspoken practice of the day was to acquit duellers.[3] It was the last such quasi-legal duel in Toronto." from Wikipedia - Samuel Peters Jarvis - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Jarvis.1,2,3

Baldwin and his son Robert*; his family was connected with the Baldwins by marriage. He was defeated in his own attempts at office: in the elections for the legislature in 1816 when he sought to succeed his father as the representative of Simcoe and the East Riding of York and was beaten by Peter Robinson* who had the support of Strachan; and in the elections for city council in Toronto in 1837 at the time of his dispute with the lieutenant governor. However, he often gave active and effective support to the candidacy of others: for example, to Robert Baldwin in his successful attempt to unseat Sheriff William Botsford Jarvis* in the elections for the House of Assembly in 1830, and to Robert Baldwin Sullivan* in 1835 in his successful campaign to replace William Lyon Mackenzie* as mayor in Toronto’s second municipal election." in 1835 at Toronto, York Co., Upper Canada.1 He "Ridout was dismissed on 12 July 1836 from the offices of judge of the Niagara District Court, colonel of the East York militia, and justice of the peace by Sir Francis Bond Head, who “as Lieutenant-Governor, by the advice of my Council, deliberately selected him for punishment, as the most intemperate of my opponents.” The charges, which Ridout denied, were insult to the person and office of the lieutenant governor and disloyalty to the policies of the crown. The dismissal became a cause célèbre in the colony and at the Colonial Office, and it was one of the major political issues in Upper Canada during the subsequent 18 months leading up to the outbreak of rebellion in December 1837. Responding to a petition from Ridout, the colonial secretary, Lord Glenelg, ordered his reinstatement. Head declined and submitted his resignation rather than comply with this instruction, “it being utterly impossible for me to obey this order, and retain my authority in the province.” The resignation of the lieutenant governor, primarily on this issue, and on the related issue of his refusal to name Marshall Spring Bidwell a judge as Glenelg wished, was in fact accepted in a dispatch from London, dated 24 Nov. 1837, a week before the rebellion broke out in Upper Canada, where people were still unaware of this development. The dispute over Ridout’s appointments, rather than the rebellion, was thus the main cause of Head’s resignation, and, as such, a significant episode in Canadian history." http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/ridout_george_10E.html on 12 July 1836 at Toronto, York Co., Upper Canada.1 He appeared on the census of April 1861 at Jarvis St., St. Patrick Ward, Toronto, York Co., Ontario; Age 70 at 1861 Census: Ridout, George, 70, b.
