C. Russell (his maternal grandfather.)5 He "The second contingent volunteers from Brighton were given a befitting farewell Monday last, when the citizens of the town congregated in the Opera House and demonstrated their appreciation of the loyalty that prompted the boys in enlisting to take part in upholding the flag that has ever stood for freedom and justice. an Appropriate program was arranged. Reeve R. J. Boes occupied the chair, and after a few brief remarks, called upon Reverends A. K. McLeod, Rural Dean Pickford, W. Elliott and S. H. Lamb in succession, all of whom addressed the gathering suitable to the occasion. On the platform with the boys were the members of the Village Council and Mr. Sam Nesbitt, M.P.P. (Bill Nesbitt's uncle). Fervent prayers for the boy's' welfare and safe return were offered. Near the conclusion of the proceedings Mr. Nesbitt was called on, and after an appropriate speech, presented each of the boys with a monogrammed wrist watch on behalf of the citizens of the Village and Township, and his personal gift in a sealed envelope, which he requested them not to open until they were on the train. Following this Mrs. McLeod, Mrs. Pickford and Mrs. Elliott, on behalf of the town, presented each with a parcel of knitted articles. Colonel Russell was given an opportunity to reply for the boys and upon the conclusion of his remarks Mr. Nesbitt arose and explained that the Colonel was on of the first to enlist for overseas service, but on account of the seniority list in service, has not yet been accepted. The addresses were interspersed with patriotic selections by the band, the favorite being the marching song of the Briti9sh forces in the present war. "It's a long way to Tipperary", which the Boy Scouts sang heartily to the band's accompaniment, and upon being played a second time the audience joined in. The program was closed with the singing of "God save the King." Rousing cheers were given for the boys, the flag and King. Leaving the Opera House a procession was formed of numerous automobiles (remember this was 1914), hand wagons and pedestrians, leading to the (train) station where the conclusion of the memorable farewell to the boys took place. Wristwatches were also purchased for the boys who went from Brighton with the First Contingent, and these will be forwarded to them in England. Capt. H. P. Snelgrove, of Cobourg, who is in charge of the Company to which the Brighton Boys of the First Contingent belong, will also receive a wristwatch, the gift of Mrs. Sanford." The boys who left Brighton with the First Contingent are: - J. W. Briggs*, G. Davis, S. Hare*, A. Jenkinson, F. Johnson, Frank Richardson*, R. Suddell, J. Tough*, W. Taylor* and G. Withers. The Second Contingent boys are: - D. Cooper, Ralph Francis Dusenbury, William John Hebbert, Arthur Edmond H. Jones, George J. L. Jones, R. Johnson*, James McCoy, F. A. Mutton, William John Nesbitt, Hugh Proctor, Hubert Keith Roblin, Hugh B. R. Strong, L. Webberson and Edward Young." Note - those marked * did not return. (from "They Went Together", pg. 7, by John Stephens) on 26 October 1914 at Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario.6 He "Kingston - November 1914; The job of putting together the 21st Battalion and the rest of the Second Contingent now started. The Commanding Officer of the 21st was Lieutenant Colonel W. S. Hughes - the Warden of Kingston Penitentiary and brother of the Federal Minister of Militial - and his superior in the 4th Brigade was Colonel Denison. While there were many camps across the country, the 21st was based in barracks at Kingston. Work had begun on October 26 to empty out and prepare the Tet Du Pont Barracks, Artillery Park and a building known as the Cereal Works to accommodate the new battalion and by October 29, 250 men had arrived. Two days later the canteen at Tete Du Pont was placed out of bounds and no one was permitted to enter bars in the city before 6 PM. Each day, 10% of the men were given evening passes until midnight. The men, who started drilling on the Tete Du Pont Square on November 3, were now officially known as the 21st Canadian Infantry Battalion. The Kingston Daily British Whig reported that 904 men came to town that day, bringing the battalion strength to 1005. Although the main method of transport was by train, some walked miles to get there. "The men, as a rule, are a fine looking lot; well built and intelligent." The battalion was housed in two separate buldings about a mile apart. The headquarters and "A" and "B" companies were quartered in the Armouries and "C" (Bill and Keith) and "D" companies were at the former cereal mill. This meant that "C" and "D" had to march an extra mile every day, because all parades and maneuvers started from headquarters. Their daily schedule started at 6 AM with breakfast at 7, Last Post at 10 PM and Lights Out at 10:15. Each battalion had a set of service colours and a cap badge. Their colours (righht) were identified as belonging to the Second Contingent, be the large "C" and the roman numerals II. The cap badge is shown (left) with "21" and "Canada" on the maple leaf. It took many days to process the new group and about half had been issued uniforms by November 7. On Sunday, 920 men attended Divine Services in the Armouries and stood at attention while hearing the message. George and Arthur Jones each wrote a letter to the folks in Brighton, thanking everyone for the watches and the clothing they had been given. "Thanks to your good work, we were without a doubt the best equipped squad that came to Kingston."" from page 8 pf "They Went Together" by John Stephens, transcribed by Dan Buchanan, Sep 13 2014. on 3 November 1914 at Tette du Pont Barracks, Kingston, Frontenac Co., Ontario.
