Many years later her brother, Ted Snider, would start the Trenton Citizens Band. “We grew up on music, that was our entertainment then,” Ms. Baker said. “In those days, there was no radio or anything. Dad would get us around the piano and we’d all sing.” Throughout her childhood, Ms. Baker says the piano was a central theme. School lunch hours were spent sitting around a piano with her friends and after school, the house was filled with the sound of music. After she graduated from Brighton High School, Ms. Baker went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music, then called the Toronto Conservatory of Music. In 1935, Ms. Baker graduated with a degree in music before returning home to Smithfield and settling down. Several years later Ms. Baker put her degree to use and began teaching local students how to play piano. “At one time I had 46 pupils. Now that goes back over 50 years ago,” she said, explaining that school children were allowed to leave school for a certain period of time each week to take piano lessons. On top of teaching music full time and playing in the Eastern Ontario Concert Orchestra, Ms. Baker says the main part of her musical past was spent at church. She played piano at Trenton Grace Church, Trinity St. Andrew’s and at Smithfield United Church for more than four decades. “All of those memories, the choir memories, the church memories, it’s like a family... such beautiful memories,” she said. As the years have passed and Ms. Baker’s hearing has begun to fail, she has had to give up her passion and instead takes pleasure in her memories. “My ears bother me terribly and I don’t think I’m getting the correct sound, but I do miss it,” she said. Although she continues to teach one young student, Ms. Baker says that when her final pupil reaches a certain stage, she will have to give up teaching altogether and refer her on to another teacher. “When pupils come back, sometimes 70 years later, it’s so nice,” she said. “It means so much when the pupils continue to enjoy their music and use it.
