It was held on Thursday August 31 near the west end of the route, on the farm of William Lovatt which had been appropriated for the canal right of way. Local bands from Trenton and Brighton were brought in to entertain the several thousand spectators, as well as the large numbers of local politicians who took part in the festivities. These included Mackenzie Bowell and other local M.P.'s like Robert Read and John White, who had been strong supporters of the canal.
